Football Notes: Big-time offers for Brewer, Jones, McIntyre; honors for Kapp

Two months ago Wyomissing’s Caleb Brewer said he was “kind of shocked” when he received his first major college scholarship offer, from Maryland.

In the weeks since it’s become routine: The 6-5, 300-pound tight end has received nearly two dozen offers since September.

The two latest really get your attention: Notre Dame on Wednesday and Michigan on Thursday.

Those coming few weeks after an offer from Tennesee.

“Caleb is elite,” his offensive line coach, Steve O’Neil, wrote on Twitter earlier this week. “He is big, physical, quick, can move, and plays with a mean streak. What I love most about Caleb is how he finishes blocks. He plays to the whistle and puts people on their back.”

Brewer is being looked at as a college offensive tackle. He was moved to tight end this season, and will stay there for his senior season, because Spartans coach Bob Wolfrum likes the way he sets the edge for the running game.

Penn State coach James Franklin got a first-hand look at him Oct. 8 when the Spartans played Cocalico at the A-Field. A few days later Brewer received an offer as a Preferred Walk-On.

Considering the Big Ten competition — Big Ten rivals Nebraska, Illinois, Rutgers, Maryland and now Michigan — has offered full rides it’s likely Penn State will upgrade its offer.

Two offers show that Brewer is more than just a football player: From Princeton and Army. Those are institutions where character and grades really matter.

Thinking Kapp

Kutztown University’s Jerry Kapp has been named to the College Sports Communicators’ Academic All-America team.

The Boyertown grad is a four-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete, three-time D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award honoree and has been named to the Dean’s List four times. Kapp graduated summa cum laude with a sport management degree in May and is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration degree.

Kapp is the first Golden Bear football player to earn Academic All-America honors since Josh Smith was named to the second team in 2011. Overall, he’s the fifth KU football player honored.

He finished as one of the top receivers in program history and ranks third in receiving yards (2,190) and fourth in TD catches (22) in three seasons with the Golden Bears.

Kutztown went 8-3 this season and 5-2 in PSAC East play to finish second.

Jadyn Jones set to sail

Former Wilson running back Jadyn Jones has committed to play at the U.S. Naval Academy, he has announced on Twitter. He was offered in October.

Jones played a post-graduate season at St. Thomas More School in Oakdale, Conn.

Jones was a two-time all-league pick at Wilson in 2020 and 2021. As a senior he rushed for 1,364 yards and scored a team-high 15 TDs, helping the Bulldogs win the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 1 title and reach the District 3 Class 6A championship game.

Bison don’t miss on Mac

Charlie McIntyre was often overshadowed by all of the big line recruits at Wyomissing. Still, it was hard to miss a guy who led the Lancaster-Lebanon League by averaging 10.9 yards per carry.

Bucknell didn’t.

McIntyre has been offered and accepted a Preferred Walk-On spot on the Bison roster.

He rushed for 1,028 yards and scored 12 touchdowns as a senior. He was also a standout at cornerback and received second-team all-league honors in Section 5 on defense.

Hoffman to hit The Rock

Former Wilson quarterback Brad Hoffman, who played this season for Diamond Prep Academy, has committed to play at Slippery Rock.

Last season the 6-1, 215-pound Hoffman was the first Wilson quarterback to rush for 1,000 yards, leading the Bulldogs to a 9-4 record, the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 1 title and a spot in the District 3 Class 6A championship game.

He rushed for 12 TDs and 1,080 yards and passed for 846 yards and 11 TDs as a senior.

Hoffman was named South MVP after throwing for 153 yards in the Lancaster-Lebanon League’s Tri-County All-Star Game following his senior season.
