Fleetwood set to name football coach
It appears Fleetwood is staying in-house for its next head coach football.
Steve Pangburn, the Tigers’ offensive coordinator the past two seasons, is in line to be approved by the school board when it meets Tuesday, according to minutes posted on the school district website.
Pangburn was brought in by former head coach Steve Beatty when he was hired prior to the 2020 season. The two coached together at the youth level in the Blazer Midget football in Birdsboro.
The 62-year-old Beatty resigned following last season due to health considerations.
Two head coaching position remain open in Berks, at Reading High and Boyertown.
Matt Hoffert was hired as head coach at Hamburg last month.
Beatty’s final game was a 47-35 victory over Boyertown in the Eastern Conference Class 5A/6A championship game. That capped a 7-4 season, one of the best in program history.
Pangburn, working with one of the league’s top quarterbacks in Tanner Maddocks, guided an offense that ranked No. 5 in Berks in total yards and produced 32.7 points per game.
The seven wins were one short of the program record, established in 2019.
The Tigers finished 6-4 during the regular season and tied with Conrad Weiser for second place in Section 2 of the Berks Football League. It was just the fourth winning record in the program’s 21-year history.
The Tigers went 2-5 in Beatty’s first season.
Pangburn, if approved, will be the seventh head coach in Fleetwood history. The Tigers debuted at the varsity level in 2001 and have had four winning seasons in 21 years.
