FAWN GROVE – It may have been a scenic drive from Berks County to Southern York County Friday evening but there wasn’t much else to enjoy for the Fleetwood Tigers in their trip to Kennard-Dale.
| Final | |
| Kennard-Dale | 17 |
| Fleetwood | 0 |
While Kennard-Dale had its share of troubles offensively, it took advantage of a muffed punt in the second-quarter for a Ryan Green 6-yard TD run, a 30-yard field goal at the buzzer of the half before Hayden Orem broke free for a 28-yard touchdown run to cap off a 17-0 non-league win.
It was the third straight loss for Fleetwood (2-4) and the first time it has been shut out this season.
The Rams owned the line of scrimmage defensively, forcing Fleetwood to all but abandon any semblance of a running game.
That put added pressure on senior quarterback Chase McMonagle to avoid the rush and find open receivers. McMonagle aired it out, throwing 35 times for 107 yards, but the passing attack found little rhythm throughout the night.
Fleetwood head coach Steve Pangburn, whose team pulled out a last-second victory on the same field two years ago, was understandably disappointed in the outcome.
“We got beat up front,” Pangburn said. “And when you get beat up front, you’re not going to win too many games.”
The Tigers were held to just 6 yards on the ground. They actually had 24 yards rushing at the half but the Rams knowing Fleetwood had become one-dimensional played a part in the minus-18 yards over the final 24 minutes.
“We just couldn’t run the ball,” Pangburn said. “Again, we got beat up front and we weren’t getting anything significant on the ground all game.”
McMonagle’s 15-yard scramble late in the first half proved to be the longest run of the night for either side until Orem’s burst with 2:10 left effectively put the game out of reach.
Part of Pangburn’s frustration stemmed from the close calls that seemingly went against his team all night. A muffed punt deep in their territory set the Rams up for Green’s salvo midway through the second-quarter. McMonagle had quite a few passes that were either dropped or were just within a few inches of becoming receptions.
To compound matters, a late turnover on downs with 1:02 seconds left in the first-half at the Rams 23 helped ignite a Kennard-Dale drive that resulted in Boyles’ field goal.
The Tigers received two big gifts in the first-quarter that could have changed things. Kennard-Dale quarterback Noah Hoffer had a 34-yard touchdown run negated by a holding call. The next play saw a scrambling Hoffer throw a pass directly into the arms of Fleetwood linebacker Andrew Barber, who had a lot of open-field ahead of him. Barber returned the interception 45 yards to the 20, seemingly setting up the Tigers to take the lead.
The Tigers were only able to get to the 12 before a 29-yard field attempt sailed wide right.
The Tigers were limited to just 113 total yards offensively. That’s something Pangburn knows won’t cut it as his team heads into the final four weeks of league play. The Tigers return to Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 3 play next week against Warwick.
“We have the better part of our schedule coming up,” Pangburn said. “So we’ve got to get it figured out because we’re back in Section 3 play for the next four games.”
