Turning point

The Eagles (3-3, 4-6) were ahead 14-7 in the second quarter when Brendon Zimmerman intercepted a pass and returned it 37 yards to the Tigers 28. That set up James Anderson’s 24-yard rushing touchdown three plays later.

Zimmerman reached the end zone on a 15-yard run in the third quarter.

Stars of the game

It was the Horning and Horning Show as the sophomore twin brothers led Cocalico’s rushing attack. Logan Horning ran for 127 yards on 14 carries, including a 40-yard touchdown run on a one-play drive in the second quarter that put the Eagles to stay 14-7.

Meanwhile, Connor Horning had 109 yards on 14 attempts. He had a pair of 1-yard touchdowns on quarterback sneaks, and a 7-yard touchdown on a keeper to the right.

Connor Horning only completed two passes, but one was a 34-yard touchdown pass to Chase Breneman for the game’s final points with 2:20 left.

For Fleetwood (0-6, 2-8), Beau Fegley ran for 139 yards and two touchdowns. He gained 63 yards on the Tigers’ opening drive, when he took a direct snap out of the Wildcat formation on each play. He capped that series with a 5-yard touchdown run. Fegley had a 67-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and a 50-yard touchdown pass to Chase Adams in the third quarter.

Key stat

Not surprisingly, the game came down to running the ball, as Cocalico had 324 yards on the ground while Fleetwood had 189. Nate Bourassa helped the Eagles hold the Tigers under 200 rushing yards, especially with an 11-yard sack in the second quarter.

Some of the rushing plays by both teams were wiped out by penalties — including an Alexander Mitchell touchdown for Fleetwood in the first quarter — as they combined for 18 accepted flags for 140 yards.
