Five Fast Football Facts for Week 8

1

According to the Born Power Index Gov. Mifflin is the No. 1 team in Pennsylvania, with a 116.9 power rating. The Mustangs are followed by St. Joseph’s Prep (116.8), Mount Lebanon (113.6) Pittsburgh Central Catholic (112.4) and La Salle College (108.5). All are Class 6A schools; Mifflin is 5A.

The highest-ranked Class 5A team is Malvern Prep (102.3), which is not affiliated with the PIAA. The next-highest ranked PIAA 5A is Pine-Richland (100.4), which is 4-3.

Among District 3 Class 5A teams, Exeter (85.9) is second.

The rankings are based on margin of victory or defeat and strength of schedule.

Wyomissing goes for its 23rd straight regular-season win Friday against Kutztown. That would tie the Spartans for fourth-longest streak in Berks history.

Wilson owns the longest streak, winning 30 straight regular season games between 2012-15. That includes perfect 10-0 runs in 2013 and 2014.

The streak was stopped Sept. 18, 2015 with a 20-19 loss to Central Dauphin. The Bulldogs won nine straight after that.

3

Among District 3 teams Cumberland Valley has the toughest schedule, by virtue of the strength-of-schedule factor used in the district power ratings. The Eagles’ 10 opponents have a .768 winning percentage. Cumberland Valley (3-4) has played Manheim Central, Central York, Spring-Ford, Carlisle and C.D. East — not a lot of breaks there.

Among Berks team, Muhlenberg (.700) has the toughest schedule, followed by Wilson (.680) and Gov. Mifflin (.663). The Muhls’ schedule included non-league games against Selinsgrove (5-2), Ephrata (5-2) and Conrad Weiser (5-2); they have played Exeter (4-3) and meet Gov. Mifflin (7-0) and Berks Catholic (5-2) the next two games.

4

Gov. Mifflin has interrupted a pair of otherwise perfect seasons so far. The Mustangs’ 49-13 defeat of Harrisburg was the Cougars’ lone loss; they are 6-0 otherwise. Same for York High, which has gone 5-0 since its season-opening 55-6 loss to Mifflin. Wilson, Cocalico and Exeter are each 4-2 outside of games against the Mustangs.

The Villanova recruit took back a pair of those picks for touchdowns in a 41-0 win over Upper Perkiomen. He had three interceptions in that game, setting a program record.

Fleetwood’s Tanner Maddocks, a senior safety and quarterback, has intercepted a Berks-leading six passes — or one more than he has thrown in 106 attempts this season.
