One year after seeing his sophomore season cut short by an injury, Berks Catholic grad Andrew Kurtz returned with a big junior season for Clarion, ending it by earning all-conference honors.

He was named the first-team placekicker on the Pennsylvania Conference Western Division team.

Kurtas converted 10-of-12 field goals, one of just two kickers in the conference to make 10 or more this season.

Only five kickers in the country converted field goals at a higher rate than Kurtas (83.3%).

The highlight of his season came Oct. 11 when he made a 33-yard field with 1:29 remaining to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good in a 48-46 win over Gannon.

He kicked three field goals in a 23-17 victory over Seton Hill, converting from 37, 20, and 38 yards, the last with 2:38 remaining to extend the Golden Eagles’ lead to 23-10.

Kurtas’ longest field goal of the season was 44 yards, in a 42-23 loss at Slippery Rock.

He was 40-of-42 on extra point attempts and recorded 18 touchbacks.
Kurtas was one of three Golden Eagles to earn first-team honors, and one of 10 overall to make the team – the most for the program since 2002.

As a freshman, Kurtas made six field goals and 26 PATs.

Kurtas made 4-of-5 PAT last year in the season-opener before suffering a season-ending injury.

The highlight of his high school career may have come when he drilled a 44-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to give Berks Catholic the lead against Wyomissing, ranked No. 1 in the state at the time.

As a senior at Berks Catholic Kurtas finished second in the Berks Specialist of the Year competition after sharing the Berks lead with six field goals.

He was selected to participate in the East/West Small School game after his senior year.

Clarion finished 6-5 overall this season, 2-4 in the Western Division.
