Carter, Thompson among six Wyomissing players selected for East-West game

Nevin Carter and Amory Thompson will have one last high school football game together before heading off to play at California University in the fall.

The Wyomissing All-State picks will be teammates again in the PSFCA East-West Small School All-Star Game along with four of their Spartans teammates.

Julian DiMaio, Rory Filoon, Tommy Grabowski and Ja-Mhi Jackson will also play for the East squad May 29 at Bishop McDevitt’s Rocco Ortenzio.

The Small School game, which features players from Class 1A, 2A and 3A schools, will kick off at 5. The Big School game will kick at noon. Rosters for that game, which feature players from Class 4A, 5A and 6A schools, will be announced later today.

Last year was the first time the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association split the annual All-Star game into a Big School/Small School format.

Five Wyomissing players were selected for the inaugural Small School game: Jordan Auman, Darren Brunner, Aidan Cirulli, Seamus Filoon and Zach Zechman.

Wally Hall of North Schuylkill will be head coach of the 36-member East squad.

Carter, Thompson and the other seniors helped the Spartans win a third straight District 3 Class 3A championship last season and reach the PIAA title game for the second year in a row.

Carter, Thompson and Grawbowski were picked for the Pennsylvania Sportswriters All-State team.

Carter was a true lock-down cornerback who was rarely challenged because of his defensive prowess. He had three interceptions, returning one for a TD. In six postseason games Wyomissing opponents passed for a total of 89 yards, completing 15-of-65 passes.

Grabowski rushed for 1,417 yards, scored a team-best 26 touchdowns and averaged 7.1 yards per carry. He was a three-year starter at linebacker and was second on the team with 73 tackles. He is listed on the East roster as a running back.

Thompson, listed on the East roster as a running back, earned All-State honors because of his versatility. The three-year starter at cornerback was strong in coverage and against the run. He also rushed for 911 yards, averaging 8.7 per carry, and scored 17 TDs. He handled punt and kickoff returns.

The 6-3, 240-pound Jackson was a defensive end who had 21 tackles and 10 quarterback pressures.

The 5-10, 200-pound DiMaio was a Berks Football League Section 2 second-team all-league pick at both center and defensive line. He is listed on the East roster as a defensive tackle.

The 6-3, 185-pound Filoon was a starting outside linebacker who had 21 tackles and nine quarterback pressures.

Wyomissing All-State tight end Aiden Mack was selected earlier in the week for the Big 33 team and was not eligible for this team. The Big 33 game will be played May 30.

The Wyomissing players are among 15 selected from District 3 schools, along with Middletown defensive end Tajae Broadie, Lancaster Catholic punter Danile Mueller and Steel-High wide receiver Tyrone Moore.

Two players from PIAA Class 3A champ Central Valley were selected for the West squad: Running back Landon Alexander and linebacker Matt Merritt.
