Cameron Small: Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week

Even if he never took a handoff Cameron Small would be a game-changing player for Muhlenberg. In Friday’s 42-37 win over Academy Park the senior linebacker recorded 10 tackles, including one for loss.

“It’s his presence, (and) the way he flies to the football (that are so important),” said Muhls coach Rob Flowers.

Of course, Small does get touches on offense. Lots of them. Friday he rushed for a season-high 301 yards on 34 carries. He also saw his number called an incredible five times when the Muhls, trailing much of the game, went for two-point conversions after their final five touchdowns.

“When we put it in (No.) 2’s hands, we feel really good about that,” Flowers said.

Small’s total package – the yards, the four touchdowns, the three conversion runs, the 30 points, and all those tackles – add up to another Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week award, his second of the season.

“This is probably the best (all-around) game he’s had since he’s been with us,” said Flowers.

Small was picked as Offensive Player of the Week twice last season.

Small’s contributions put the Muhls (5-1, 8-1) in position to earn a share of the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 2 championship; they’ll tie Conestoga Valley (6-0, 9-0) for first place if they beat the Buckskins Friday in Laureldale.

Against Academy Park he scored on runs of 11, 3, 4, and 5 yards, the last with 5:39 remaining. His two-point run pulled the Muhls within 37-34.

Small enters Week 10 with 1,557 rushing yards and is in position to become the first back in Berks history to rush for 2,000 yards in consecutive seasons. He ran for 2,051 yards in 11 games as a junior. Muhlenberg has clinched a District 3 playoff spot so it will play at least two more games.

Small, in his second season with the Muhls after tranferring from Reading, is on the doorstep of the program career rushing record. He’s rushed for 3,598 yards. Jason Reinhart set the record with 3,703 yards, from 1996-98.

Small enjoyed a milestone in Friday’s game. His final carry of the night left him with 4,000 career yards – just the sixth player in Berks history to reach that figure, and the first since Governor Mifflin’s Nick Singleton crossed that plateau in 2020.

“I don’t put too much attention on the individual numbers and records,” said Small. “My focus is to win, so when the records come with it, that makes that much better.

“We come every day to practice and put in the work. We trust each other 100 percent in the huddle. We believe in each other. So that’s a big part of why we’ve been successful.”

Small has rushed for 100 or more yards seven times in nine games this season and has scored two or more touchdowns in all but one game. Before Friday he had a pair of 200-yard rushing performances, against Reading and Elizabethtown.

Last season he topped 200 yards five times, with 290 in a Week 10 game against Conestoga Valley and a program-record 346 against Exeter.

He has scored a league-high 25 touchdowns, two more than he had last season.

“Cam has some of the best vison and balance when running the ball that I have seen in my time,” said Flowers. “He knows what’s taking place (on the field). He’s following his blocks, he’s being patient. He understands that he can’t get into the hole before the lineman gets there because the play will never work.”
