Bishop Guilfoyle QB named Class 1A Player of the Year

Karson Kiesewetter, who quarterbacked Bishop Guilfoyle to the PIAA Class 1A championship, has been named Player of the Year on the Pennsylvania Football Writers Class 1A All-State team.

Kiesewetter, a 6-1, 192-pound junior, is one of five Guilfoyle players on the 40-man team, selected by sportswriters across the state.

The Class 2A and 3A teams will be announced later Tuesday. The Class 4A, 5A and 6A teams will be announced Wednesday.

Guilfoyle’s Justin Wheeler shares Coach of the Year honors with Blane Gold of Redbank Valley. Guilfoyle defeated Redbank Valley 21-14 in the game; it was the Marauders’ fourth state championship and first since winning three in a row from 2014-16. Guilfoyle finished 12-4.

Kiesewetter is joined on the All-State list by four teammates, including three defensive linemen, all juniors: Anthony Cioffari, Dominic Yanoshak and Sante Bambocci. Running back Cooper Rother was also selected.

The Marauders’ five selections are the most of any team. Canton had four. Redbank Valley was among several teams with three selections.

Kiesewetter ran for 128 yards and a TD and threw for 119 yards and a TD in the championship game. He passed for 1,942 yards and 13 touchdowns and led his team in rushing with 1,113 yards and 22 TDs. He also had 106 tackles on defense and intercepted four passes, including one that sealed the championship victory.

Rother rushed for 96 yards and scored on a 14-yard run for the go-ahead score with 3:21 remaining in the championship game. He rushed for 1,005 yards and 11 TDs and caught a team-leading 48 passes for 661 yards and three TDs.

Kiesewetter was among five quarterbacks selected. He’s joined by Steel-High sophomore Alex Erby, who threw for 3,206 yards and 42 touchdowns, and Redbank Valley’s Bryston Bain, who threw for 2,253 yards and 30 TDs. Erby was an All-State pick as a freshman.

Logan Kent of Conemaugh Valley and Jack Wagner of Reynolds, among six running backs selected, each rushed for over 2,000 yards.
