Berks Combine unveils rising stars for upcoming season

Chris Susana didn’t get on the field much last season for Gov. Mifflin.

Expect that change soon.

Susana showed off his athletic gifts Thursday at the Chris Nunn Memorial Football Combine, winning a pair of events, placing in two others, and emerging as the top-scoring individual in the six-event competition.

“He’s a super-gifted athlete,” said Mustangs coach Nick Morrissey of the 6-foot, 170-pound rising junior. “I certainly wasn’t surprised that he was competitive in all the events and won a couple of them. He’s started to turn the corner and committed to the weight room. That’s definitely helped.”

The annual competition, hosted by Conrad Weiser, features many of the same skills events used by the NFL during its Scouting Combine.

They measure speed, agility, explosion, and strength, key ingredients that often lead to success on Friday nights.

Exeter’s Jayden Zandier was the top individual scorer the past two years and he followed up by twice earning All-State honors and rewriting the Eagles’ record book.

Thursday’s top performers should end up as headliners this fall.

Conrad Weiser’s Braden Sweitzer, a rising senior, finished second in the individual competition, winning the Pro Agility Shuttle, placing second in the L-Cone Drill, tied for third in the 40-yard dash, and fourth in the Vertical Leap.

Gov. MIfflin’s Chris Susana.

Gov. Mifflin’s Lebron Leaf was third overall after finishing second in the Pro Agility Run, third in the Vertical Leap, third in the L-Cone Drill, and sixth in the 3-Hop Drill.

Berks Catholic running back Nate Rose won the bench press.

Schuylkill Valley had a pair of winners: Logan Cammauf took the Vertical Leap, Brandon Pyle was tops in the 40-yard dash.

Exeter again won the overall team title, getting a big performance from rising senior tailback Leo Brown, who placed in the top seven in three events, including a second-place finish in the 40.

Jackson Kosik, Aidan Dauble, Jake Hafer and Braylon Reinert also scored for the Eagles.

Gov. Mifflin was second and Conrad Weiser third in the team event.

Seven schools competed: Berks Catholic, Conrad Weiser, Exeter, Gov. Mifflin, Twin Valley, Schuylkill Valley, and Wyomissing.

Conrad Weiser won the Quarterback Challenge, with Connor Sellars making the throws to Dylan Parr and Owen Kerns. Wyomissing was second and Schuylkill Valley third. It was not a scored event.

Susana, Sweitzer, and Leaf were the only athletes to record top-seven finishes in four of the six scored events. Cammauf, Rose, Kozik, Gov. Mifflin’s Patrick Steuer, Twin Valley’s Ryan Rementer, and Wyomissing’s Ethan Betances each scored in two events.

Susana won the L-Cone Drill and 3-Hop Drill, placed second in the Vertical Leap and tied for fourth in the Pro Agility Shuttle Run. All of those skills will help when he steps into the mix at slot back and fullback this season for the Mustangs.

“His running style reminds me of Wilson Fontanez (who set the Mifflin rushing record with 1,634 yards in 2014),” said Morrissey. “He’s not like our (typical) straight-line fullback. He’s really quick, more like a scatter fullback. When he gets the ball, he’s gifted.”

He’ll be taking the ball from Leaf, who is expected to be Mifflin’s quarterback. Leaf was a second-team all-league linebacker as a junior and averaged over 11 yards per carry as a slotback. He couldn’t play quarterback because of a shoulder injury but that was addressed with postseason surgery.

“He’s been working his tail off ever since,” Morrissey said. “He’s gonna bring a running back style to the position. Him having the ball in his hands 40 to 50 times a game with a threat to run is going to be huge for us.”

Berks Catholic’s Nate Rose.

Sweitzer’s outstanding performance came as a bit of a surprise to Weiser’s coaching staff. He’s a relative newcomer to football and didn’t get on the field much last season because the Scouts had such a senior-dominated lineup.

After seeing him run a 4.56 in the 40 and finish in the top four in four events Scouts coach Alan Moyer said he will have to alter his gameplan for the upcoming season.

“He certainly surprised us with those numbers, especially with his speed,” Moyer said. “(Our staff) sat down afterwards and said: ‘We’ve gotta find a way to get this kid the ball. It’s something we will definitely be looking at next week during spring practice.”

The kicking competition, usually a part of the Combine, was postponed due to the wet conditions.
