Josiah Jordan is Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week

Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week

Berks Catholic’s first win of the season didn’t come clearly into focus until early in the fourth quarter Friday. The Saints were clinging to a six-point lead against Donegal before Josiah Jordan fielded a punt at his own 44 and took off.

The speedy senior back registered his first career punt return touchdown, putting the Saints over the top in the 21-9 victory.

“Whenever you get a special teams touchdown like that, it really knocks the wind out of your opponent’s sails,” said Berks Catholic coach Rick Keeley.

Jordan accounted for all three of the Saints’ touchdowns and rushed for 106 yards on 16 carries to earn Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offense Player of the Week. He scored on runs of 1 and 4 yards and also had a reception for 16 yards.

As he’s done all season, the versatile Jordan has carried the Saints’ offense Friday, accounting for more than half their total yards.

Over five games this season he has scored 11 of the Saints’ 15 touchdowns, with at least one in every game.

Jordan has carried the bulk of the load in the running game, too; he has more than twice as many carries as anyone else, unusual in a Wing-T offense that usually spreads the ball around equally.

Of course with a talent such as Jordan you want to take full advantage of his skills.

“He can get to the corner and go,” Keeley said. “He can make things happen. He’s got good speed, he has good moves.

“One of the things that scares me sometimes about JayJay is that he just won’t go down. He spins and turns and gets hit (fighting for extra yards).”

Jordan led the Saints with 20 TDs as a junior, when he rushed for 800 yards and added 305 yards in the passing game.

“He’s an explosive runner who makes people miss,” said Keeley. “He’s a strong kid, and he does a good job of blocking when we run the sweep. When he’s running it, he has the speed to score.”

Jordan leads Berks Catholic with 460 rushing yards, fourth-most in Section 4 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League. He also leads the team with nine receptions.

He is averaging 23.8 yards on six kickoff returns and 26.5 yards on two punt returns.

The three-year starter at cornerback has two interceptions and is second on the team with 34 tackles.

This is Jordan’s first selection as Offensive Player of the Week; he was selected Defensive Player of the Week last season.

Players considered for Player of the Week honors are nominated by their coaches or by members of the MikeDragoSports.com coverage team.
