Backfield duo of Drew Engle, Lucas Myers like no other in Berks history

Susquehanna Township coach Joe Headen accurately called Twin Valley’s rushing attack a “two-headed monster.”
Senior Drew Engle gets most of the carries, and most of the headlines, but he splits time at tailback with junior Lucas Myers, who has been equally productive.
Engle has rushed for 1,855 yards and 31 touchdowns. He averages 10.2 yards per carry and a touchdown every 5.87 touches.
Myers has rushed for 1,098 yards and 21 TDs. He averages 10.0 yards per carry and a TD every 5.24 carries.
Together, they have formed the most productive rushing duo in Berks history (with each back rushing for at least 1,000 yards in a season).
When they combined for 357 yards last week in a 41-21 win over Susquehanna Township Engle and Myers passed the Governor Mifflin duo of tailback Wilson Fontanez and quarterback Jan Johnson. That combo produced 2,831 yards in 2014 (also in 13 games).
Engle and Myers are unlike most previous rushing duos in that they essentially split the tailback position. They are rarely lined up on offense together. They often trade off by series. Last week, against ’Hanna, they were often splitting series, taking three or four carries in a row before subbing out for the other.
On Twin Valley’s game-changing, 16-play, 82-yard scoring drive Myers had eight carries, Engle seven. The last carry of that series, interestingly, was by quarterback Maverik Foster, who rarely carries the ball. He went 24 yards around left end for a touchdown after effectively faking a dive to Engle.

“You’re not just preparing for one big running back, you’re preparing for two,” Headen said, “and they play behind a very well-coached offensive line.”
Twin Valley has averaged over 300 rushing yards game and over 400 total yards.
Most of Berks’ top running combos have featured a pair of running backs, though some, like Mifflin’s in 2014, have included a quarterback.
Engle, during his breakout sophomore season, was part of what’s now the No. 3 combo on the Berks list. He went for a program-record 1,599 yards; Evan Johnson rushed for 1,089. They split the tailback spot and generally traded off by series.
Conrad Weiser’s DJ Robinson also cracks the list twice, with Codie Butler in 2009 and with quarterback Mike Oliveto the following season.
There’s one brother combination on the Top 10 list: Isaac and Cooper Lutz of Berks Catholic, halfbacks in a Wing-T offensive.
Overall, there have been 19 such 1,000-yard combos in Berks history. Conrad Weiser has produced four; no other program has produced more than two.
Kutztown, it should be noted, this season became the first Berks team to produce three 1,000-yard backs in the same season. Their top two, Mason Sherry and Ryan Walters, land at No. 8 on the Berks list.
