Daniel Boone held powerful Lampeter-Strasburg scoreless in the first quarter but it was all Pioneers after that as they pulled away for a 41-0 win in a Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 4 game at Birdsboro.

It’s the third time Daniel Boone (0-2, 0-5) has been shut out this season.

Lampeter-Strasburg (2-0, 4-1), the reigning Section 4 champ, rode the hot hand of junior quarterback Asher Jones. He completed 14-of-16 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns to Cole Lopez. Jones also rushed for two scores as the Pioneers scored 21 points in the second quarter.

“I was pleased with the first quarter, but the defense wore down,” said Blazers coach J.D. Okuniewski.

The coach pointed to mistakes by the Blazers, including a high snap which stalled an early drive.

“We have to stop playing what I call ‘Whac-A-Mole,’ ” he said, referring to the arcade game. “We have to address the mistakes.”

Those mistakes prevented the Blazers from taking advantage of a strong start by running back Haydn Moyer, who gained 58 yards, much of it in the first quarter.

“We got off to a good start but couldn’t keep it going,” Okuniewski said. “The team kept fighting. We just need to build on a good start and keep it going.”

Daniel Boone looked to get on the board in the second half, surprising Lampeter-Strasburg with an onsides kick. The Blazers recovered at midfield but on the next play quarterback Dominic Stoudt was intercepted by Keegan Curtis, who ran it back 50 yards for a touchdown to give the Pioneers a 28-0 lead.

“I got it with one hand and just ran as hard as I could,” said Curtis.

Jones added another rushing touchdown and Pioneers All-State placekicker Peter Fiorello booted two field goals, from 31 and 24 yards.

Despite heavy graduation losses the Pioneers are making another run at a section title.

“Guys are hungry,” said Curtis. “It’s always next man up here.”

As for Daniel Boone, the Blazers are looking to turn their season around next week at Elco.
