ANNVILLE — If Trinity football was a play Friday night, the first act was all Maddox Jarzynski.
Then, following a short intermission, it was Brandon Harris who stole the spotlight in act two.
| Final | |
| Trinity | 42 |
| A-C | 21 |
By the time the curtain closed, it was an award-worthy performance as the Shamrocks downed Annville-Cleona 42-21 in a District 3 Class 3A semifinal.
“It’s not for lack of effort,” Dutchmen coach Matt Gingrich said. “Our kids fought hard.”
But they had no answer in terms of stopping the Jarzynski-Harris duo, who accounted for all six touchdowns as the Shamrocks (9-3) earned a trip to their fourth consecutive district title game.
Next Friday night, Trinity will play Berks Catholic, which took care of defending champion Bermudian Springs 37-6 in the other semifinal.
“Typically, when we lose in the playoffs it’s to a team that wins the district championship and goes really far,” Gingrich said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if in three or four weeks, we see these guys still playing.”
Jarzynski, who had three touchdown catches and returned a blocked punt for a TD in last week’s win over Schuylkill Valley, matched that production against Annville-Cleona in the first half giving him eight touchdowns in six quarters.
“He’s a great athlete,” Gingrich said of Jarzynski, who has 15 TD catches this season. “We knew what we were trying to stop, but there’s a difference between having a game plan and knowing what you’re going to do and carrying it out.”
The 6-foot-2 senior wideout hauled in three more scoring passes — of 32, 27 and 25 yards — from Mason Boyer and also returned an interception 69 yards for a touchdown as Trinity opened a 28-14 lead at the half.
Jarzynski’s first score was a 32-yard catch on fourth-and-14 when Boyer just threw the ball in his direction and he came down with it.
“Without a doubt, they have a safety blanket,” Gingrich said of Jarzynski, who had four catches for 97 yards. “Whenever they needed it, that’s what they could do.”
The Dutchmen (8-4) started the game with a bang when Jonathan Moran ran the opening kickoff back 85 yards for a 7-0 lead.
But the Annville-Cleona offense stalled in the second half and didn’t record a first down until midway through the fourth quarter.
The Shamrock offense, meanwhile, shifted gears and featured the Harris ground attack. The sophomore running back rushed for a pair of touchdowns and 139 yards after halftime. He finished with 207 yards on 20 carries.
“I’m very proud of our guys,” Gingrich said. “We made a couple mistakes or it could have been better game. As for the season, we were just hoping to get five wins, so we’re very proud of the kids.”
