Amaya Stewart came up with a huge second half, scoring 18 points, as Wyomissing remained unbeaten by holding off a late Gov. Mifflin rally for a 50-42 victory Wednesday in a BCIAA semifinal at Santander Arena.

The third-seeded Mustangs (15-9) trimmed a 19-point deficit to six in the final minute before the second-seeded Spartans (24-0) clinched it on Annie McGaffrey’s transition basket off an assist from Stewart.

Wyomissing faces either No. 1 Wilson or No. 4 Berks Catholic, which will meet in the second game of the quadruple header. The championship game is Friday at 6:00.
Wyomissing the first team to taken an unbeaten record into the championship game in at least 18 years.

Stewart scored 11 points in the third quarter as the Spartans broke open a close game with a 12-0 run that extended their lead to 15 points. She opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer, then scored inside for a 41-22 lead with 6:40 remaining.

The Mustangs closed the gap with a 14-2 run that made it 43-36 with 1:55 left. Taylor Koenig, who finished with a team-high 17 points, hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute to make it 48-42.

McCaffrey had 14 points and eight rebounds for Wyomissing. Freshman Bella Super scored 16 for Mifflin, including nine in the final quarter.

Wyomissing defeated Reading High 46-36 in the BCIAA quarterfinals Saturday; Mifflin advanced with a 59-54 win over Oley Valley.

This was the first meeting between the teams since Wyomissing defeated Gov. Mifflin 50-48 on Abby Doyle’s free throws with 2.4 seconds left in the 2021 league semifinals.

Wyomissing returned four starters from last year’s Berks championship team: Amaya Stewart, Annie McCaffrey, Alexis Hardy, and Audrey Hurleman. The Spartans went on to win 28 games as well as their first District 3 title.
