Week 10 glance: Spartans looking to complete historic three-peat
Nevin Carter, Amory Thompson, Aiden Mack and Tommy Grabowski have been there every step of the way on this journey towards history. . . for every Wyomissing victory over the last three seasons. . . for every championship celebration.
Even they can’t get over the fact that come Saturday, with one more win, over Conrad Weiser, they’ll become the first team in Berks history to record three consecutive perfect regular seasons.
“It’s mind-blowing, when you think of it,” said Carter, like Thompson, Mack and Grabowski, a three-year starter. “I have not ever lost a regular season game. Some guys never win a game; for us to have the possibility of never losing a regular season game . . . that’s incredible.”

Indeed, the Spartans (5-0, 9-0) have done many incredible things over the years but by closing out their Berks Football League Section 2 season with a win over Scouts (4-1, 7-2) they’ll add another page to their history book.
Wyomissing has won 24 straight regular season games, the third-longest streak in Berks history. If not for COVID-19, which forced a truncated schedule in 2020 — the Spartans played just five regular season games — they’d be even higher on the all-time list.
“It’s kind of cool to think about it, that you haven’t lost one game on this field yet,” said Thompson, pointing to the A-Field where the Spartans have won 16 straight times. “On Saturday, that’s what we’re trying to complete. It would be 30 games if it wasn’t for COVID. However many games it is, we just want to complete it.”
Wyomissing vs. Conrad Weiser is just one of three championship games involving Berks teams as the regular season concludes.
At Gurski Stadium, Wilson (4-0, 6-3) will try to wrap up a perfect run through Section 1 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League by beating Manheim Township (3-1, 6-3). With a loss the Bulldogs share the title.
At Forino Sports Complex, Gov. Mifflin (2-0, 7-0) seeks to complete its third straight perfect run in Section 1 of the Berks Football League by beating Berks Catholic (2-1, 5-3). The Saints can tie for the title with a win.
Elsewhere Friday, it’s rivalry week.
Hamburg (1-3, 5-3) plays at Schuylkill Valley (1-4, 2-7) in the 41st Frost Bowl. The Hawks lead the trophy series 23-16-1 and the overall series 23-22-1.
Muhlenberg (0-3, 0-8) meets Reading High (0-3, 1-6) for the 18th Battle of the Border Trophy. The Red Knights lead the series 9-8.
Kutztown (0-4, 2-6) plays at Fleetwood (3-2, 5-4) in the eighth Hall of Fame Trophy Game.
In the PAC-10 it’s crossover week, with Boyertown (3-6) of the Liberty Division hosting Upper Merion (4-4) of the Frontier Division.

Saturday at 6, Twin Valley (6-3) tries to lock up its first district berth with a non-league game at Gettysburg (6-3).
Saturday at 1:30, Wyomissing and Conrad Weiser renew a storied rivalry; they haven’t met since 2013.
What the Spartans have done is incredible, given that they had to replace 16 starters and a dozen all-league picks from a team that played for a state championship.
It has looked seamless as juniors such as tackle Jven Williams, linebacker Matt Kramer, running back Drew Eisenhower and safety Charlie McIntyre have stepped right in and replaced All-State players.
“They got the reps last year, they knew exactly what they were doing and stepped in this year and have done an amazing job, all of them,” said Grabowski, a fullback and inside linebacker.
The Spartans have been every bit as impressive this season as they were a year ago. They’re ranked No. 3 in the state in Class 3A and knocked off the state’s top-ranked Class 2A team, Southern Columbia, on its home field. That snapped the longest winning streak in the nation.
Now it’s the Spartans who are looking at extending their winning streak. They’re still a young team, and with half their starters returning next season have a chance to challenge Wilson’s record of 30-straight regular season wins.
Just don’t ask head coach Bob Wolfrum about it; he’s not counting anything.
“We don’t think about it,” he said of the 24-game winning streak, or the three straight unbeaten seasons. “Streaks are something that we don’t talk about. We just try to win the game every week that we’re playing.”
