No. 2 Wyomissing set to begin another run toward PIAA championship game

2023 Berks football coverage presented by

Wyomissing enters the postseason ranked No. 1 in District 3 and No. 2 in the state in Class 3A.

The Spartans (9-1), who earned a first-round bye in the District 3 Tournament, open the postseason Saturday at Bob Wolfrum Field against No. 4 Schuylkill Valley (9-2), which beat Littlestown 45-21 in the opening round.

Wyomissing is the only Berks team ranked among the Top 10 teams in the state in its class.

Wilson, in Class 6A, and Twin Valley, in Class 4A, are listed among the Teams To Watch. Exeter spent much of the season in the Class 5A Top 10 before two late-season losses knocked it out.

Wyomissing is bidding to return to the PIAA championship game after getting knocked out in the semifinals last season by Neumann-Goretti. The Spartans played for the PIAA title in both 2020 and 2021, losing to Central Valley in each.

If Wyomissing wins a fifth straight District 3 championship it will be considered the home team in the PIAA quarterfinals, against the District 4 champ. That should mean the game is played within District 3, though not likely at Wolfrum Field.

The Spartans played Danville in a state semifinal in 2020 at what was previously called the A-Field. They played on Lakeland’s home field in the quarterfinal round. The PIAA suspended its usual field location protocol that season due to the COVID outbreak.
