End of historic winning streak doesn’t affect Wyomissing’s reputation, state ranking

It says a lot about the strength and respect of Wyomissing’s football program that after the Spartans first regular season loss in nearly five years they did not drop in the state rankings.

Even after a 34-14 loss to Cocalico – a one-possession game until late in the third quarter – the Spartans remain No. 2 in the state in Class 3A in the PennLive.com rankings, one spot behind Belle Vernon.

That’s the way those teams were ranked two months ago, before the season kicked off.

It also says a lot about Cocalico’s program that a loss to an Eagles team perhaps headed to a second straight District 3 Class 5A title is not a sign of the coming apocalypse.

The loss at Cocalico snapped Wyomissing’s 41-game regular season winning streak.

Overall, the rankings weren’t changed much by Week 7 results.

Exeter remains No. 3 in Class 5A and Twin Valley remains No. 10 in 4A, where it made its debut last week.

Cocalico didn’t move up, either, despite playing a near flawless game; the Eagles remain No. 8 in 5A.

The six teams that began the season No. 1 in their classifications – St. Joseph’s Prep, Imhotep Charter, Bishop McDevitt, Belle Vernon, Southern Columbia and Steel-High – remain No. 1. Each is unbeaten save for Class 6A St. Joe’s and Class 3A Belle Vernon, each of which has one loss.
