Nick Singleton smashes century scoring mark, keeps on going
It’s 101 touchdowns, and counting, for Nick Singleton.
The Gov. Mifflin senior ran for three first-quarter touchdowns Friday in a 49-0 victory over Muhlenberg in a Berks Football League Section 1 game at Shillington.
The Penn State recruit broke the Berks scoring record a couple dozen touchdowns ago and continues to add to it each week as the Mustangs (2-0, 7-0) race toward the playoffs.
They led the Muhls (0-3, 0-8) 42-0 at the half.
Singleton finished with 124 yards on nine carries, doing most of his damage on Mifflin’s first three possessions. He scored on a 3-yard run less than five minutes into the game, added an 11-yard touchdown run with four minutes left in the opening quarter, then a 51-yard run two minutes later.
The Mustangs are ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 5A and the hands-down favorite to repeat as District 3 Class 5A champ; they won their first district title last year.
Quarterbacks Delsin McNeil and Eden Johnson also ran for Mifflin touchdowns, as did Aiden Gallen, who broke off a 47-yard scoring run.
Tynan Harter added a score on a punt return.
Gallen finished with 62 rushing yards and Trey Rock with 52 yards on seven carries.
Singleton pushed his career rushing total to 5,661 yards; the Berks record was 4,778.
He has 1,394 rushing yards for the season and is closing in on Isaac Ruoss’ program record of 1,789.
The Berks single-season record is 2,403, by Central Catholic’s David Gilmore in 1983.
Gaige Garcia of Southern Columbia owns the state record for career touchdowns, with 159; he set the record from 2016-19.
Mifflin closes the season with a home game next week against Daniel Boone and at Berks Catholic Oct. 29.
