Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week: Drew Forrey

Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week

Drew Forrey is one of those rare running backs who enjoys blocking as much as carrying the ball. Actually, he says he likes blocking even more.

“Especially down-blocking,” said Wyomissing’s senior halfback. “It’s fun. Of course, it’s fun running the ball (too).”

It was Saturday afternoon. Forrey ran for three touchdowns and a game-high 158 yards in a 28-14 win over previously undefeated Elco to earn Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week honors.

The focus coming into the game centered around Elco running back Jake Williams, the state’s leading rusher. Forrey stole the spotlight by running for touchdowns of 54, 24 and 50 yards.

“To be honest, I’m pretty surprised (about that),” Forrey said of out-rushing Williams, who finished with 133 yards.

The game was easily the biggest of Forrey’s high school career, at least from an offensive standpoint. He got most of his time as a junior at linebacker; he rushed for just 66 yards and one TD last season. He led the team in sacks last season and was second in tackles.

Wyomissing coach Bob Wolfrum said in the preseason that the 6-4, 210-pound Forrey was ready for a breakout season.

“I think people are going to be shocked by him,” said Wolfrum, “and as a pass receiver (too).”

Forrey has just two receptions this season – the Spartans don’t pass a whole lot – but one of them went for 59 yards and a touchdown at Pottsville.

Forrey knows he’s not going to get many touches in Wyomissing’s offense, and he’s fine with that. His 10 carries against Elco were the most he’s ever had. It was also his first three-touchdown game, doubling his season scoring total.

“We just happen to have seven or eight backs that we feel comfortable with in a varsity game,” Wolfrum said. “When it comes to who gets 1,000 yards and all that, we don’t have much of that because we’re rotating them so much. We’re not featuring any one back. Our kids buy into that.”

Saturday was Forrey’s turn to shine, and he didn’t miss his chance. He capped off Wyomissing’s opening drive with a 54-yard run, breaking up the middle. Later in the game he scored on a pair of sweeps.

“The middle wasn’t working for us really well,” said guard Craig Eberhart, “so we decided to get the edge and the edge kept working, so we just kept going with that. Drew finds the hole and he just goes. When he has a straightaway he’ll beat anyone.”

“I was just waiting for my blocks,” said Forrey, “and when the hole opened up I just started running.”
