Ty Yocum’s key fourth-down stop and a pair of short touchdown runs highlighted Exeter’s 33-21 win over Berks Catholic Friday in a Berks Football League Section 1 game at Forino Sports Complex.

The Eagles (2-1, 5-3) went ahead for good on Joey Schlaffer’s 27-yard touchdown catch, 26-21, the second TD pass of the night from Colin Payne in the GoBigRecruiting.com Game of the Week.

The Saints (2-1, 5-3), trailing by five points, went for it on fourth-and-inches from their own 29 but Yocum, a powerhouse linebacker, met fullback Luke Hughes head-on and held him to no gain. Seven plays later Yocum’s 1-yard run, his second score of the night, made it 33-21 with 1:31 left.

The Saints used a pair of big plays from Josiah Jordan to go into halftime tied 14-14.

His 75-yard kickoff return to the 14 set up Hughes’ 4-yard touchdown four plays later, tying it 7-7.

Exeter went back up 14-7 when Eric Nangle broke off a 17-yard scoring run, completing a 40-yard drive with 5:59 left in the first half.

Three plays later it was tied again, as Jordan, tightly covered, pulled in a pass over his left shoulder and completed the 75-yard scoring play to make it 14-14 with 4:22 left. Quarterback Mitchell Gatz made a terrific throw on the play, releasing the ball with an Exeter lineman in his face.

The Eagles had one last chance to take the lead in the first half but Payne’s Hail Mary from midfield was picked off by Marvin Armistead. It was the Saints’ second interception of the half. Isaac Pichardo had one on the opening drive of the game.
