Gov. Mifflin ascends to No. 1 in state rankings for first time

There’s been a change at the top of the PennLive.com Class 5A state football rankings.

For the first time in program history the Gov. Mifflin Mustangs are ranked No. 1 in the state.

They ascended to the top spot when former No. 1 Imhotep Charter lost 13-8 to La Salle College, the No. 7 team in Class 6A. It is the first loss for the Panthers since they fell to Dallas in the 2019 PIAA Class 4A quarterfinals. They went 4-0 playing last spring after canceling their fall season.

The Mustangs are off to an impressive 3-0 start, with mercy-rule victories over perennial playoff teams York High, Wilson and Cocalico, the latest by a 56-0 score. The Mustangs have outscored their opponents 153-20. They have not allowed a first-half score.

Mifflin was ranked No. 2 last season and lost to top-ranked and eventual PIAA champ Pine-Richland 48-44 in a hard-fought semifinal.

The Mustangs won their first District 3 championship last year and, with Penn State recruit Nick Singleton lined up in the backfield again, are favored to repeat. Only one other District 3 team, unbeaten Manheim Central, is ranked in the Class 5A Top 10. Berks League Section 1 rival Exeter is listed as a Team To Watch in 5A; the Mustangs and Eagles will play Week 7 at Reiffton.

Each of the other five top-ranked teams held their spots.

Wyomissing held at No. 3 in the Class 3A rankings, behind No. 1 North Schuylkill and No. 2 Central Valley, the defending PIAA champ. Central Valley beat Wyomissing 35-21 in the 2020 championship game.

Wyomissing remains the only District 3 team among the 15 listed in its classification.

Berks Catholic moved up one spot in Class 4A, to No. 7. The Saints host Pope John Paul II, which is listed as a Team To Watch in 4A, on Friday.

Wilson, which had been listed as a Team To Watch in Class 6A, dropped out following a 42-14 loss at Exeter.
