Steel-High’s Erbys make big impression on Class 1A All-State team

Steel-High’s Erby family — dad Andrew and sons Alex and Andrew Jr. — pulled a rare triple Thursday on the Pennsylvania Football Writers’ Class 1A All-State team.

Alex was named Player of the Year, Andrew was named Coach of the Year and Andrew Jr. was named as an offensive lineman after leading the Rollers to a 22-8 victory over Union in the PIAA championship game earlier this month.

The junior twins are among five Steel-High players selected for the team. District 11 champ Northern Lehigh and state semifinalist Canton — each knocked off by the Rollers in the state tournament — also had five first-team selections.

All-State teams in Class 2A and 3A will be announced later Thursday.

All-State teams in Class 4A, 5A and 6A will be announced Friday.

Alex Erby passed for over 3,500 yards and 40 touchdowns as the Rollers won their final 13 games and completed a 14-1 season with their fourth PIAA championship.

Reynolds, Mahanoy Area and Muncy each had three selections on the 41-player team.

Players were nominated by and selected in a vote of sportswriters across the state.
