‘Special’ talent Cam Jones of Wilson highlights 2022 All-Berks football team
Cam Jones was such a dazzling kick returner people sometimes overlooked the other parts of his game.
The Wilson senior was very good at those, too: He led backs in Section 1 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League with 999 rushing yards and was such an accomplished cornerback teams rarely threw his way.
It was his ability to return punts — one of the most challenging jobs in the game — that was most remarkable this season. He took five back to the house, easily a program record and undoubtedly a Berks record, as well. Last year he took a combined seven kicks back for TDs.
People just don’t do things like that.
“If he’s not the best kicker returner in District 3, maybe in the state, I don’t know who is,” offered Wilson coach Doug Dahms. “He’s special.”
Special enough to earn Berks Player of the Year honors, an award bestowed upon top athletes such as Chad Henne, Alex Anzalone, Michal Menet — each of whom has played in the NFL — and Nick Singleton, who appears on that path.
Jones highlights the 2022 Berks County Football Coaches Association All-Berks team as the only three-way pick: At running back, defensive back and kick returner. (He was a four-way all-league pick in Section 1 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League, but Berks coaches don’t select a long snapper.)
The only other two-way first-team pick is Lucas Palange of Exeter, a guard and linebacker. Palange is also Linebacker of the Year.
Jones is both the Offensive Back of the Year and the Defensive Back of the Year. He’s the first to earn both awards since Daniel Boone’s Tommy Bodolus in 2011. He’s the first Wilson Offensive Back of the Year since 2004, when Chaz Logan was named.
Penn State recruit Jven Williams repeats as Offensive Lineman of the Year — the first Wyomissing lineman to do that. His line coach, Steve O’Neil, won the award in 1997.
Ruben Rodriguez is the fifth Reading High player selected Receiver of the Year but first since Carmelo Ocasio in 1997. Back in the ‘Air Jet’ days the award regularly went to Red Knights, among them Tony Hardy, Jared Sadlowski and Charlie Randall.
Exeter’s Kyle Lash is Defensive Lineman of the Year, snapping a streak of four straight Gov. Mifflin picks for that award. Lash is the first Exeter player to receive the honor since Menet in 2014.

Wyomissing’s Bob Wolfrum receives the John Gurski Coach of the Year award for the record seventh time and third time in four seasons.
Jones and Palange are among six repeat selections on the first team, along with Berks Catholic defensive back Josiah Jordan, Conrad Weiser placekicker Adam Noll, Williams and Exeter’s Joey Schlaffer. Williams was selected as an offensive tackle last year and a guard this year. Schlaffer, who will join him at Penn State next year, was picked at wide receiver last year and All-Purpose Back this year.
Gov. Mifflin defensive lineman Mykell Ford is the lone sophomore on the first team. There are five juniors: Wyomissing’s Caleb Brewer, Wilson’s Edison Case, Wilson’s Jack Dendall, Schuylkill Valley’s Dominic Giuffre and Exeter’s Zach Zandier.
Exeter and Wilson each have seven first-team picks; Wyomissing has four. Eleven teams are represented on the first team.
The team was selected by Berks County head coaches; it differs slightly from the BCIAA All-Star team announced earlier in the week because Boyertown players were considered for the team, which affected vote totals at certain positions. Boyertown is not a member of the BCIAA.
