Spartans closing in on elite company

Wyomissing can join some rare company if it beats Neuman-Goretti Saturday in a PIAA Class 3A semifinal.

A victory will make the Spartans just the eighth team in Berks history to win 14 games in a season — and the first to do it in consecutive seasons.

Wyomissing won its first 15 games last season in making it back to the PIAA championship game for the second straight season. The Spartans are the only Berks team to make it to back-to-back state title games.

A win over the Saints Saturday at 1 at the Germantown Super Site will put the Spartans (13-0) in the PIAA championship game for the fourth time. Wilson, in 1989, is the only other Berks team to play for a state title game.

Wyomissing, of course, is the only Berks team to complete a perfect season: The Spartans went 16-0 in 2012, beating Aliquppa 17-14 for the title.

The Spartans are also the only Berks team to win 15 games in a season.

Five others have won 14: Wilson did it three times, Berks Catholic once and Wyomissing once.

Prior to the start of the district playoffs, teams were limited to 10 or 11 games in a season. Just three Berks teams finished 11-0: Holy Name in 1975, and Wilson in 1978 and 1981.

Four teams have finished 10-0: Wilson, in 1967 and 1969; Muhlenberg in 1972; and Conrad Weiser in 1981.

Four Berks teams have finished 9-0: Reading High, in 1913; Exeter, in 1967 and 1970; and Conrad Weiser, in 1973.

Gov. Mifflin went 9-0-1 in 1971.

Other than Wyomissing, Berks teams have not fared will in the PIAA Tournament: They have a combined 2-14 record. Only Berks Catholic and Wilson have won state-level games.

Wyomissing is 10-6 in PIAA Tournament games.
