It’s No. 1 vs. No. 2 as Wyomissing meets Danville in PIAA Class 3A quarterfinal

There’s nothing juicer come late November than a playoff game between the top-ranked and second-ranked teams in the state — not even a Butterball turkey.

That’s what we’ve got this weekend when No. 1 Wyomissing heads to No. 2 Danville for a PIAA Class 3A quarterfinal. It’s the only such match-up in the state in Week 13.

There could be several match-ups of unbeatens next week if the top teams continue to win: No. 1 St. Joseph’s Prep vs. No. 2 Garnet Valley in Class 6A; No. 1 Farrell vs. No. 2 Steel Valley in 2A; and No. 1 Canton vs. No. 2 Steel-Highin 1A. Also next week there’s a potential rematch in Class 4A between No. 1 Aliquippa and No. 4 Central Valley; the Quips won the regular season meeting.

In Class 5A, a meeting between No. 1 Upper Dupublin and No. 2 Exeter can’t happen until the championship round — and only, of course, if each continues to win.

The ranks of the unbeaten continue to dwindle. There are just nine teams in the state with perfect records: Garnet Valley and State College in 6A, Upper Dublin and Exeter in 5A, Aliquippa in 4A, Wyomissing and Danville in 3A and Steel Valley and Westinghouse in 2A. That number will shrink by at least one this weekend.
