Gov. Mifflin ranked No. 2 in the state; defending 5A champ Pine-Richland ousted

Defending PIAA Class 6A champ St. Joseph’s Prep opened its season last week with a 40-0 win over St. Mary’s Ryken of Maryland and maintained its spot atop the PennLive.com state rankings, which saw little movement following Week 2.

Each of the six top-ranked teams remained unbeaten, as did Gov. Mifflin and Wyomissing, which retained their lofty rankings.

The Mustangs beat Wilson 42-14 and are No. 2 in Class 5A, behind Imhotep Charter.

The Spartans scored an equally impressive road win at state-ranked Pottsville and remain No. 3 in Class 3A.

Berks Catholic slipped one spot in Class 4A, to No. 8, after a 35-22 loss at Central Dauphin.

Wilson, despite it’s loss, remains a Team To Watch in Class 6A, as does Exeter in 5A.

The only change in Class 6A saw No. 8 North Allegheny dropped enirely from the rankings after a 35-0 loss to Pickerington Central of Ohio; Parkland moves into the rankings at No. 10 after opening its season with a 24-21 win at Easton.

In Class 5A, No. 8 Pine-Richland, the defending PIAA champ, was dropped from the rankings after losing to Seneca Valley 24-20 and slipping to 0-2. The Rams are coming off a messy offseason in which former head coach Eric Kasperowicz was not welcomed back after internal issues within the program arose. He was accused of condoning hazing, bullying and intimidation on the team.

Kasperowicz has filed suit against the school district in federal court, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, claiming defamation.

The Mustangs are joined in the Top 10 by Manheim Central, which improved to 2-0 with a 14-0 win over Hempfield.

In Class 4A, Thomas Jefferson remains No. 1 while No. 9 Bethlehem Catholic and No. 10 Pottsville were dropped after losses. Becca dropped to 0-2 after being beaten by Whitehall 49-14.

The Saints are one of three District 3 teams ranked in the class: Bishop McDevitt is No. 4 and Cocalico is No. 9. Cocalico, coming off a 33-27 loss to Cedar Cliff, hosts Mifflin Friday.

In Class 3A, North Schuylkill, coming off an 8-0 season, remains No. 1. The Spartans won the District 11 championship in 2020 but District 11 schools did not participate in the state tournament due to COVID concerns.

No. 8 Elizabeth Forward was dropped after a 26-14 loss to Ligonier Valley.

Wyomissing is the only District 3 team among the 14 listed in its classification.
