Diamond Credit Union Lineman of the Week: Wyomissing’s Jven Williams
Diamond Credit Union Lineman of the Week
When a team rushes for over 600 yards you can be sure someone’s out in front leading the way; Jven Williams was that guy Saturday for Wyomissing.
The Penn State recruit was clearing out West Perry edge defenders like a bulldozer pushing aside tree stumps.
“At this point most DB’s don’t even come near him,” said Wyomissing offensive line coach Steve O’Neil of the 6-5, 300-pound guard, “they are just trying to avoid him.”
Williams recorded three pancake blocks and was also outstanding on the defensive side, his best all-around game of the year earning him Diamond Credit Union Lineman of the Week honors once again.
The Spartans rushed for a staggering 626 yards, their highest total in at least 30 years and possibly a program record. Matt Kramer ran for 155 yards on 14 carries and Charlie McIntyre ran for 165 yards on five carries. Five different backs rushed for 60 or more yards and the Spartans averaged over 15 yards per carry.

“We had the sweep going against them, and that’s Jven’s play leading out on the edge,” O’Neil said. “Charlie and Ryker (Jones), on their two long sweeps, were excellent in setting Jven’s block up.
“They stayed tight inside of him until the last moment, which set up Jven to get the outside leverage on the DB to spring those two long runs.
“With the success of the sweep, when the defense sees Jven pulling outside they all flow with him.
“And that’s exactly what they did on Matthew’s inside dives for his TD runs.”
The Spartans rushed for over 300 yards in each half, built a 35-7 lead by halftime and were up 49-7 midway through the third quarter. They did not punt once in the game, reaching the end zone on nine of 11 possessions. The only time they were stopped was on a pair of second-quarter fumbles.
“That’s what we expect to do,” Williams said of the offensive onslaught. “We conquered them and we were able to run up the score on them.”
With defensive lineman Caleb Brewer out with an injury, Williams stepped up his game on that side of the ball. He had three tackles, one tackle for loss and was in on one sack to help the Spartans limit the high-scoring Mustangs to one early touchdown in the 63-7 victory.
“Our D-line did a good job containing their super-quick QB,” Williams said, “and our ‘backers filled the holes. We did what we had to do.”
Williams earned All-State honors in Class 3A as a junior, was named Berks Offensive Lineman of the Year and MikeDragoSports.com Lineman of the Year.
In February Williams committed to play football at Penn State. He plans to enroll in January, meaning he’ll miss his senior throwing season. He was the Berks Player of the Year in track and field after winning PIAA championships in the discus and shot put last season.
Williams is Lineman of the Week for the second time this season and is the fourth Wyomissing player selected for the honor, along with Jack Gartner and Pacen Ziegler.
Players considered for Player of the Week honors are nominated by their coaches or by members of the MikeDragoSports.com coverage team.
