Not many quarterbacks impact the game on the defensive side; Gov. Mifflin’s Eden Johnson did in a 42-12 Week 2 win over Wilson, earning Body Zone Physical Therapy Defensive Player of the Week honors.
“He provided great coverage to limit Wilson in their passing game and made great run-stopping plays from the safety position,” said Mustangs coach Jeff Lang.
Johnson, a 5-11, 195-pound senior, had five solo tackles, forced a fumble and intercepted a pass in the end zone.
He helped the Mustangs limit Wilson to 56 total yards in the first half, just 19 of it through the air.
The Mustangs led 28-0 at halftime and 35-0 in the third quarter.
“Eden set the tone with his rushing as QB in the first quarter when he broke off the corner on an option run and ran over one of the Wilson defenders on his way to the end zone,” Lang said. “That just really fired up an already-excited sideline.”
Johnson has been central to Mifflin’s 2-0 start.
“Eden brings athleticism, leadership, and football knowledge to our team,” Lang said. “His football IQ is off the charts. He understands everything we show him and tell him the first time around.
“He can get people set up on defense, call the coverages and make those quick on-the-field decisions that need to be made. He is a great football player in all facets of the game!”
