Exeter moves up in state rankings; Wyomissing holds at No. 1 in Class 3A

Exeter took advantage of a shakeup in the PennLive.com Class 5A state rankings, moving up one spot to No. 3.

The Eagles (4-0), coming off a dominant 36-6 win, moved up along with No. 2 Upper Dublin when last week’s No. 1, Imhotep Charter, lost for the second straight week and No. 3 Gateway lost at Franklin Regional 16-7. Imhotep lost at Malvern Prep, 17-13, and fell to No. 2; Gateway drops out of the rankings completely.

In Class 3A, Wyomissing held off Berks Catholic 41-24 to improve to 4-0. Meanwhile, Belle Vernon, which opened the season at No. 1, lost for a second straight week, falling at home 14-13 to defending 5A champ Penn-Trafford.

Unbeaten Hamburg makes its debut in the Class 3A rankings as a Team To Watch.

Belle Vernon slips to No. 5, one spot ahead of Loyalsock, which lost for the first time.

Penn-Trafford, which beat Exeter last year in the Class 5A state semifinals, moved back into the Class 5A rankings, at No. 9.

The top-ranked teams in Class 6A, 4A, 2A and 1A — St. Joseph’s Prep, Aliquippa, Farrell and Canton, respectively — also held their spots.

The biggest change in 6A came from No. 3 Pittsburgh Central Catholic, which lost to Mount Lebanon 17-16 to drop to 2-2. The Vikings dropped out of the rankings.

The Class 6A Top 10 now includes three teams from District 3: No. 7 Cumberland Valley, No. 8 Manheim Township and No. 9 Harrisburg.

Defending champ Exeter is the lone District 3 team in the Class 5A Top 10.
