Five Fast Football Facts for Week 2

1

Central Dauphin is one of the few opponents Wilson hasn’t dominated over the years. The Rams own a 7-5 series lead going into tonight’s game at Speed Ebersol Stadium.

The Rams are one of only two teams to beat the Bulldogs in four straight seasons, from 2015-18. (Pottsville is the other, from 1991-94.)

The only other programs with a series lead over Wilson (with five or more wins) are:

Cumberland Valley: 9-6

Lebanon Catholic: 9-7-4

Harrisburg: 9-8

Schuylkill Haven: 8-6-1

Pottsville: 7-5

Spring City: 6-1-1

Wilson Area: 5-3

The Bulldogs will never catch up with Lebanon Catholic or Spring City; those schools are now closed.

Berks Catholic saw its 11-game, opening-game winning streak snapped last week with a 34-21 loss to Loyalsock.

The Saints set the Berks record by winning 11 straight season-openers; no one else has come close.

Berks Catholic lost its first game in its inaugural season, 2011, to Pope John Paul II, then not again in Week 1 until last week.

Joey Schlaffer

3

Joey Schlaffer set a program record with a pair of touchdown receptions in Exeter’s opening 35-0 win over Daniel Boone.

Schlaffer, a starter at wide receiver or tight end since his freshman season, has 22 receiving TDs, topping the mark of 21 set Alex Javier from 2017-19.

Javier broke the mark of 19, set by Gabe Schappell.

If Schlaffer remains at receiver he’ll break Javier’s career receiving mark of 1,950 yards; he has 1,669, third-most in program history. Schappell has 1,741.

He’ll soon pass Javier’s program record of 95 career receptions; Schlaffer has 87 after snagging four balls last week.

4

Muhlenberg lost its first six meetings to Reading High, from 1974-79, but the Muhls have had the better of things lately.

They’ve won four of the last five meetings and twice during that span have avoided a winless season by beating the Red Knights in Week 10. Last year they won 38-6 to snap a 26-game losing streak; they avoided an 0-10 season in 2018 with a 23-13 win.

They meet tonight for the 19th time; the series is tied 9-9.

5

Gov. Mifflin saw its 21-game regular season winning streak snapped last week by Spring-Ford, 21-10.

The Mustangs had recorded three straight perfect regular seasons, though the last two were shortened due to COVID-19 cancellations by opponents. They played just six regular season games in 2020 and eight last year.
