Mustangs’ long win streak snapped in opening-night loss to Spring-Ford

(This story will be updated shortly with additional details and postgame reaction.)

Despite some big runs from fullback Brayden Reis, penalties and crucial mistakes down the stretch kept Gov. Mifflin from claiming its season opener Friday night at Shillington.

Spring-Ford quarterback Matt Zollers hit Gabe Swanger for a key, 33-yard touchdown reception and the Rams kept the Mustangs off the board from there for a 21-10 non-league victory.

The Mustangs entered the game with a 21-game regular-season winning streak. They hadn’t lost a regular season game since falling to Cocalico 26-14 early in the 2019 season.

The Mustangs, 10-1 a season ago, have a revamped lineup with 18 new starters, nine on each side of the ball.

Mifflin will look to bounce back next Friday when they will face off against Carlisle.
