Gov. Mifflin sophomore Jackson Parker top performer at Berks football combine

The annual Chris Nunn Memorial Combine always provides an early glimpse into the upcoming football season. If an athlete performs well at the combine-style event there’s a good chance he’ll do likely this fall once football season kicks off.

A year ago Exeter’s J.R. Strauss dominated the challenge, finishing in the top 10 in six events. A few months later he dominated on Friday nights, helping the Eagles win their first district championship. He’ll be playing at Villanova this fall.

As you might expect, Exeter’s Joey Schlaffer — a Penn State recruit — was one of the top performers Friday at Conrad Weiser.

The top overall performer was a relative unknown, Gov. Mifflin sophomore Jackson Parker. He won the 3-Hop drill, shared first place in the vertical leap and scored 38 points, tops in the field of 56 players.

Seven Berks school competed, each bringing eight players to compete in each of the six events. There was also a quarterback challenge and kicking competition.

The six combine events were: The 40-yard dash, L-Cone Drill, Pro Agility Shuttle Run, 3-Hop drill, vertical leap and bench press. They tested players for speed, agility, explosion, mobility and strength.

Gov. Mifflin’s Jackson Parker soars in the vertical leap.

The 6-2, 155-pound Parker scored top 10 finishes in five of the six events. Only one other competitor, Schlaffer, scored in as many as four.

Parker finished tied for second in the Pro Agility Shuttle, tied for third in the L-Cone Drill and was eighth in the 40.

Schlaffer, a junior, was second in the 3-Hop drill, fourth in the 40 and scored in the vertical and L-Cone Drill.

Wyomissing’s Matt Kramer won the Pro Agility Shuttle. Berks Catholic’s Dylan Sutton tied for first in the 40. Conrad Weiser’s Sevon Parham won the L-Cone Drill. Daniel Boone’s Draven Klick tied Parker for first in the vertical. Exeter’s Lucas Palange won the bench press.

Parham and Berks Catholic’s Marvin Armistad were the only other competitors to score points in three events.

Wyomissing and Daniel Boone tied for first in the Quarterback Challenge, which involved passers throwing various routes to two of their receivers. Ben Zechman quarterbacked for Wyomissing; Dean Rotter was Boone’s quarterback. They each started at that position last year.

Conrad Weiser’s Adam Noll won the kicking competition, which included placements, kickoffs and punts. Noll finished first in each of the three categories. Ben Rada of Wilson was second in punting and kickoffs; Ian Levering of Wyomissing was second on placements.

The seven schools were: Berks Catholic, Conrad Weiser, Daniel Boone, Exeter, Gov. Mifflin, Muhlenberg and Wyomissing.
