Fleetwood is looking for a new head football coach for the first time in five years after Steve Pangburn turned in his resignation last week.

Pangburn coached in the program for six seasons and was head coach for the past four. The Tigers’ best season in that span came in 2023, when they finished 6-5 and won an Eastern Conference Class 4A championship.

Two years earlier, when Pangburn was the offensive coordinator, the Tigers also finished with an Eastern Conference championship.

The Tigers finished 2-8 this season, losing their final seven games. Overall, they went 13-28 over the last four seasons.

Pangburn did not give a specific reason for leaving at this time.

Sources close to the situation at Daniel Boone have told MikeDragoSports.com that Pangburn is the leading candidate to be named Blazers head coach later this month. Boone head coach J.D. Okuniewski resigned following last season.

Pangburn, 47, is a 1996 Daniel Boone grad and coached in the Blazer Midget Football program for seven years before coming to Fleetwood in 2020 as head coach Steve Beatty’s offensive coordinator.

“It was just time for me to step aside,” Pangburn said of leaving Fleetwood. “I’m proud of what we achieved there, and wish them much, much continued success.”

The Tigers graduate quarterback Chase McMonagle and all-league linebacker Tanner Zornek but had a relatively small senior class, with just nine entering last season.

The junior class is double that size and produced several top players who should anchor next season’s team: All-League running back and defensive back Beau Fegely, all-league wide receiver Chase Adams, all-league tight end Bryce Ryan and all-star linebacker Parker Detwiler. Fegely led the team with 774 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns; Ryan led the team with 33 receptions and Adams was next with 21 catches.

In 2021 Pangburn, working with one of the league’s top quarterbacks in Tanner Maddocks, guided an offense that ranked No. 5 in Berks in total yards and produced 32.7 points per game. The seven wins that season were one short of the program record, established in 2019.
