Nick Singleton set for final high school football game in Texas showcase

Nick Singleton plays the final game of his high school football career and what might be considered the first of his college career Saturday in the All-American Bowl at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

The Gov. Mifflin running back is one of 100 seniors selected for the week-long showcase, which culminates with kickoff at 1 (EST). The game will be televised on NBC.

Singleton will be wearing No. 10, the same number he wore for the Mustangs when he set Berks records with 116 touchdowns and 6,326 yards. He averaged 10.2 yards per carry over his career.

Singleton, named last month Gatorade’s national Player of Year, is one of the game’s marquee attractions. He added yet another honor Friday afternoon when he was named the Adidas All-American Bowl Offensive Player of the Year.

Singleton is one of four Penn State recruits in the game, along with Drew Allar, Dani Dennis-Sutton and Keon Wylie.

Singleton, ranked the nation’s No. 1 running back by 247sports.com, excelled throughout the week in practice. According to a report on 247sports.com he caught the ball well out of the backfield during red-zone 7-on-7 competition.

“Singleton simply plays at a different gear than the defenders chasing him,” reported Gabe Brooks of 247sports.com.

Other finalists for the Offensive Player of the Year award were Allar, Devin Brown, Gavin Sawchuk and Gunner Stockton.

The All-American Bowl Defensive Player of the Year Award went to Concord (Calif.) De La Salle’sZeke Berry, who signed with Michigan. The Anthony Munoz Lineman of the Year Award went to offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr. of Seattle’s Rainier Beach High School.

After a brief stop home in Shillington following the game Singleton will head to State College where he will enroll and begin classes Monday at Penn State.

The All-American Bowl has featured nearly 500 NFL draft picks, including 108 selected in the first round. More than 170 alumni have been selected to the Pro Bowl, 74 have won Super Bowls and 12 have been named NFL Rookie of the Year.

Chad Henne of Wilson and James Bryant of Reading High are among Berks players selected in the past for the All-American Bowl.
