Record-setting Drew Engle has no problem scoring touchdowns or sharing the credit

If Drew Engle got a game ball for each of the touchdowns he scored Friday night he’d be able to give one to each of his offensive linemen — and keep the sixth for himself.
He’d give one to center Noah DiGiacomo; one to each of his guards, Greyson Miller and Andrew Boswell; and one to each of his tackles, Zach Troutman and Liam Sheehan.

“My offensive line does a fantastic job and they keep on rolling,” Engle said after visiting the end zone six times in Twin Valley’s unexpectedly easy 42-7 rout of visiting Lampeter-Strasburg. “Them doing their job makes mine a little easier,”
On paper the Raiders vs. the Pioneers looked like a can’t-miss game: A pair of state-ranked teams tied for first place in Section 4 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League.
That much-anticipated showdown never materialized.
A couple minutes into the second quarter Engle already had his third touchdown and it was obvious that the Pioneers (5-1, 7-2), with quarterback Asher Jones and some other key pieces unable to play, couldn’t keep up.
The game quickly turned into a rout, much like last year’s meeting at Twin Valley Stadium when the Pioneers blitzed the Raiders with 56 first-half points on the way to a 62-14 victory.
Engle and the Raiders (6-0, 9-0) put that nightmarish memory to bed quickly. They’re a focused bunch and they didn’t let the fact that Lampeter-Strasburg was short-handed deter their effort.
They played as hard as ever and overwhelmed the Pioneers, with Engle reaching the end zone on each of the Raiders’ four first-half possessions.
“We just expected to play their best team possible and come out excited,” Engle said.
Now Twin Valley is on the verge of its first Section 4 title, and first outright championship since joining the Lancaster-Lebanon League. It shared the Section 3 title in 2023 with Ephrata and Garden Spot.

Twin Valley closes out its regular season schedule next week against Daniel Boone, which got its first win of the season Friday. It’ll go into the District 3 Class 4A Tournament probably as the No. 2 seed and more than likely the favorite to bring home its first district title.
Without Jones, his team’s leading rusher, the Pioneers did nothing but spin their wheels on offense. Sophomore Carter Hess, who had thrown all of three passes this season, was thrust into the starting role at quarterback.
“We threw him into the lion’s den for his first start,” said Lampeter coach Victor Ridenour. “That’s tough.”
The Raiders are ranked No. 1 in the league in total defense and their numbers only got better after holding the Pioneers to seven first downs and 84 total yards, easily season lows.
“I think our defense did a good job tonight,” said Engle, a safety. “We’re firing off the ball, and that’s really the key to this game.”
That was one of them. So were Engle’s 184 rushing yards and his TD runs of 3, 1, 20, 7, 8, and 1 yard. By halftime he had already matched the program record for touchdowns in a game, shared by several players, including current teammate Lucas Myers and Myers’ older brother Evan, who did it last year as a senior.
In fact, Engle’s six TDs were just one short of the Berks County record. Only one Berks player in the last 75 years has scored seven TDs in game – Nick Singleton. You may have heard of him.
It wasn’t just Engle doing the damage but Lucas Myers, as well. He went for 117 yards on just 12 carries, including a 50-yard run to the 11 that set up Engle’s fifth TD.
Ridenour knew his defense would be challenged to stop that dynamic duo; he was right.
“You rarely ever see one of those kids go down with (only) one kid hitting him,” he said of Engle and Myers. “They do a great job breaking tackles and extending plays with their legs. They’re good football players.”
Engle crossed the 1,000-yard mark for the second time; he’s now at 1,070 for the season and 3,187 for his career, less than 500 yards away from Dominic Caruso’s career program record.
“We definitely emphasize pounding the ball,” Engle said. “That’s something we’ve done for quite some time now. It starts with our offensive line. I’m super-happy to be running behind them because they’re great at what they do.”
| SECTION 4 | League | Overall |
| Twin Valley | 6-0 | 9-0 |
| Lamp.-Stras. | 5-1 | 7-2 |
| Wyomissing | 4-1 | 7-1 |
| Elco | 3-3 | 4-5 |
| Octorara | 2-3 | 4-4 |
| Donegal | 2-4 | 3-6 |
| D. Boone | 1-5 | 1-8 |
| N. Lebanon | 0-6 | 1-8 |
The Raiders entered the game ranked No. 3 in the state and, after what they’ve done the past two weeks, it’s hard to argue with that lofty ranking. Last week they outscored Wyomissing 21-0 in the second half en route to 28-6 victory. Friday they neutralized Lampeter-Strasburg’s big offensive line and controlled the game with their own strong offensive front.
Brett Myers tried to downplay the lopsided score; he respects Lampeter’s program and praised the fight he saw.
“Effort-wise, I felt they matched us,” Myers said of the Pioneers. “They just didn’t have some of the guys they need. Those kids battled, and those coaches deserve a lot of credit for showing up and fighting like champs. They were holding on to a section championship with everything they had.”
Ridenour was not about to make excuses.
“We still had our entire offensive line and our (No. 1) running back,” he said. “Football’s a sport of 11 people, and tonight their 11 people were better than ours.”
