For relentless Raiders it was just a matter of time

It took a while for everything to fall into place, for Twin Valley to clearly dominate, to put enough weight on the scale before it tipped, but Brett Myers saw this landslide coming right away Saturday afternoon at Wolfrum Field.

When Drew Engle broke free for a 53-yard gain on the Raiders’ first play scrimmage, when the Raiders’ relentless offensive line kept pushing forward, it was obvious how this battle of state-ranked, unbeaten teams would end up.

Twin Valley didn’t officially clinch this 28-6 Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 4 victory until the final minutes, when Engles glided into the end zone with his second touchdown, but it was clear in the opening minutes which team would end the day with a perfect record still intact.

“First drive,” responded Myers when asked when he saw that his team could impose its will against the Spartans (4-1, 7-1). “We just needed to keep going, get ’em in a rhythm.”

That came in the second half when the Raiders (5-0, 8-0) were simply a machine, driving for three touchdowns to gradually pull away.

That front line of center Noah DiGiacomo, guards Greyson Miller and Andrew Boswell, and tackles Liam Sheehan and Zach Troutman set the tone, clearing a path that Engle rode to 199 rushing yards on 27 carries, most of it in the second half.

“They’re very impressive,” Wyomissing coach Bob Wolfrum said of the Raiders. “I knew they were good, but they kicked our butts. Second half, they physically beat us up.

“We could not match their intensity. We couldn’t block ’em; we couldn’t keep ’em blocked. We tried to make the block and they’d run right through it. It’s frustrating.”

Wyomissing controlled things for a large portion of the first half and went into intermission trailing just 7-6. Powerful fullback Chase Eisenhower was pushing defenders backwards and moving the chains, and the Spartans unleased a pair of long, momentum-shifting drives.

They moved from their own 1 to the Twin Valley 12 on one impressive 15-play, 9 ½-minute march. They maintained possession so long the Raiders were able to run but two plays in the second quarter.

The Spartans essentially saw their chances to win evaporate because they couldn’t fully cash in on a pair of red zone opportunities. They were forced to settle for a field goal when quarterback Brady Eisenhower fumbled the snap on a third-and-1 at the Twin Valley 12 with five minutes left in the opening half.

After a Twin Valley fumble the Spartans took over at the Raiders 32 and moved to a first down at the 11. They netted just 6 yards on three plays. When Lucas Myers stopped Danny Fleischood on third-and-5 from the 6 Maher came out again for another field goal.

“It was awesome,” Lucas Myers said of keeping the Spartans out of the end zone. “It took a whole team effort. Everybody was doing their job. We were just working together.”

That stop felt like a victory for the Raiders.

“We give up a touchdown there, it’s 7-10,” Brett Myers said. “It feels a little different than 7-6. They drew a line in the sand and did a great job.”

There was no stopping the Raiders after that. They drove the field coming out of half, Lucas Myers ending a 70-yard march with a 4-yard TD run.

When the Spartans were forced to punt from their own 7 late in the third quarter, the Raiders got a 16-yard punt return from Ben Grundy to the 20. Five plays later Engle pounded over from the 3 to make it 21-6.

On four second-half possessions, Wyomissing punted three times and netted just 38 total yards. The big plays it usually unleashes never developed.

“I thought we could get a little bit closer to their level,” Wolfrum said, “(but) we couldn’t match that today. We matched it for a quarter.”

A big key for the Raiders defense was taking All-State halfback Justice Hardy out of the game. He dominated last year, with 297 yards from scrimmage in the Spartans’ 34-24 victory. This time he wasn’t a factor. He was limited to 17 yards on six carries and didn’t have a catch.

“Everybody on the defense was doing their job (to stop him),” Lucas Myers said.

The Spartans went to Hardy on their first series, on a deep sideline pass on third-and-8. Cornerback Ben Grundy, able to match Hardy’s sprinter speed, went up high and knocked the ball away.

“With our team speed, you’re sometimes able to negate one person’s speed,” Brett Myers said, pointing to Grundy and to a West Point lacrosse recruit Engle, who ran a 4.41 in the 40 at Villanova. “We had good angles. Next time it’ll be the same thing: If we don’t have good angles we won’t contain him. Today we did.”

Saturday’s win didn’t settle anything. Twin Valley remains tied atop Section 4 with Lampeter-Strasburg but has to this all over again Friday when it plays Lampeter in a game that well could decide the section title.

The Spartans, meanwhile, will regroup and wait for another shot at the Raiders, likely in the District 3 Tournament.

“It’s good every once in a while to get beat up like that,” Wolfrum said, laying the groundwork for a rematch. “You realize: ‘Maybe we’re not that good and we have to work a little harder.’ ”
