Cameron Small: Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week
Muhlenberg hasn’t needed to lean on Cameron Small as much as it did a year ago. The Muhls’ passing game has improved exponentially, providing balance on offense, and their defense has made big strides.
Still, faced with their first true challenge of season Friday at Elizabethtown, the Muhls turned to their All-State tailback and he came through.
He made some big plays at linebacker and clinched the game with a 63-yard touchdown run with a minute to go in the 35-21 win that kept the Muhls unbeaten.
“For him to finish the game the way he did was a big deal,” said Muhls coach Rob Flowers.
Small rushed for 226 yards, scored three touchdowns, and recorded nine tackles to earn Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week honors for the first time this season. He was selected twice last year.
Small, who leads Berks with 16 touchdowns, scored on runs of 1, 65, and 63 yards.
“I have so much trust in Cam,” said Muhls quarterback Adriel Baez said. “He’s our guy, man.”
Elizabethtown scored with 2:58 to make it a one-possession game. Muhlenberg responded with a score of its own to seal the deal.
“Once he cleared the second level, we said: ‘Oh, that’s a house call,’ ” said Flowers. “That was exciting. That was the clincher.”
In addition to 25 carries, the 5-11, 185-pound Small had two receptions for 31 yards.
“It was a four-quarter performance,” Flowers said. “I didn’t realize he had 226 yards; I thought he was having a quiet night. He gutted it out the whole time. That was important to see.”

Small is now second in the Lancaster-Lebanon League in rushing with 957 yards. Only Solanco’s Johnny Garcia, at 1,026, has more.
Small has run for 15 TDs and has one touchdown reception. Four of his scoring runs have come from 50 yards or longer.
A year ago he had five TD runs of 50 yards or longer during an 11-game season that saw him rush for a program-record 2,051 yards and score 23 touchdowns. He set a program record with five 200-yard games and a single-game record with 346 yards.
In Friday’s game he became just the third Muhlenberg ballcarrier to top 3,000 career yards, following Jason Reinhart and Mel Fegely. He needs 17 yards to pass Fegely for No. 2 on the all-time list and 696 yards to top Reinhart’s record of 3,703.
Overall, including two seasons at Reading, Small has rushed for 3,410 yards. He needs 275 yards to crack Berks’ all-time Top 10 and 590 yards to become just the sixth in Berks history to reach 4,000 career yards.
No Berks back has ever rushed for 2,000 yards in consecutive seasons. Small is within range of becoming the first.
Small’s workload has been reduced somewhat from last season, when he averaged nearly 23 yards per carry. With Baez become more adept in the pocket, and with wide receivers Michael Miller Jr. and Freddy Lacey becoming bigger threats, Small hasn’t needed to carry the load every Friday night.
“Because we’re able to throw it a little more, it opens some things up for Cam and it does cut his numbers down a little,” Flowers said. “We don’t need him to carry it 40 times. There’ll be a game where we need him to do that, but it hasn’t been yet.”
Small is the third Muhlenberg player to earn Player of the Week this year, following Baez and Miller Jr.
