KINZERS — Coming off a tough loss against Bethlehem Catholic in Week 3, Berks Catholic righted the ship with an impressive 41-0 win Friday night at Pequea Valley in a Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 5 opener for both.

The Saints (2-2) took control by scoring 27 points before halftime to cruise past the Braves (2-2).

Berks Catholic dual-threat quarterback Johnny Sauppee scored on a 5-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter, giving BC a quick 6-0 advantage.

Return man Owen Schalk fielded a punt near midfield and sprinted 47 yards into the end zone to close out the first with Berks Catholic up 13-0.

Early in the second, Sauppee connected with Schalk on a 13-yard TD pass, extending the deficit to 20 points.

Berks Catholic running back Coy Koller finished out a lengthy drive with a 7-yard TD run later in the quarter, sending the Saints into the locker rooms up 27-0.

Berks Catholic tacked on two more scores in the second half to stretch its lead to 41 points. Xavier Gerald broke to the outside on a 39-yard TD run in the third quarter and Mason Mace scored on a 15-yard TD carry in the fourth.

Jeremiah Camara, who transferred from Reading High shortly before the season, made a big debut for the Saints, rushing for 120 yards on 12 carries. He had not been eligible under PIAA rules to play until Friday.

Gerald (five carries for 58 yards and a score) and Wyatt Burkman (six carries for 55 yards) played big roles in the run-heavy Saints offense, which entered Week 4 with the fifth-most rushing yards in the league.

The Braves, who ranked as the league’s fifth-best defense, were unable to contain the Saints’ potent Wing-T attack, yielding 382 yards of total offense (340 on the ground, 42 through the air).

The BC defense forced two turnovers (one interception, one fumble) and held PV to 38 total yards.

Berks Catholic will host Lancaster Catholic next Friday in Week 5, while Pequea Valley will visit Schuylkill Valley.
