One year ago Drew Engle suffered a broken collarbone in Twin Valley’s season opening football game against Berks Catholic.

Engle had hoped to back up a sophomore season where he set a Raiders single-season record for rushing yards. Instead, Engle was limited to just three games and 293 yards rushing.

Now a senior, Engle needed just one game and seven touches to virtually match last year’s yardage output, posting 164 rushing yards in Twin Valley’s season-opening 45-19 rout of visiting Berks Catholic.

Engle led a relentless rushing attack for the Raiders that racked up 274 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Take away two fumbles late in the game and Twin Valley would have put up almost 300 rushing yards.

“I’m super-grateful for my offensive line, they did an incredible job blocking today,” Engle said.

Engle also added an interception on defense late in the second quarter that set up the second of three Lucas Myers rushing touchdowns.

The physical strength of Twin Valley’s linemen was obvious from the first snaps of the game as their offensive line pushed Berks Catholic around with ease; on defense they regularly disrupted plays. The Raiders outscored the Saints 39-3 in the first half.

“Their hard work in the weight room over the last nine months showed tonight with their explosion,” Twin Valley head coach Brett Myers said.

Twin Valley had a new quarterback under center for the first time in four seasons as sophomore Maverik Foster stepped in to replace Evan Myers, who graduated as the all-time leading passer in program history.

Foster didn’t have too many occasions to throw given Twin Valley’s dominance on the ground, but he had only two incompletions on eight attempts and one passing touchdown.

Myers was pleased with the way Foster operated the “hectic-at-times” Twin Valley offensive system and the way he kept up the pace. Foster even converted a fourth down deep in his own territory by getting Berk Catholic to jump offsides with a hard snap count.

“When you have multi-sport athletes (like Maverik) that have to make decisions all year round, they’re the guys you trust to make decisions come football season and clearly tonight he was making the right ones,” Myers said.

Berks Catholic also had to replace a record-setting quarterback this season after Zach Suski graduated. Cole Harter took his place but had a difficult day against Twin Valley’s overwhelming defense. Harter was sacked three times and completed just 5-of-11 passes for 36 yards.

Berks Catholic only managed one field goal in the first half after recovering a Twin Valley fumble inside the Raiders 20. Their remaining points came in the second half with the Mercy Rule in effect and both teams playing their reserves.

One positive that Berks Catholic will take away from this contest is a very strong kicking game.

Schuylkill Valley transfer Alex Reali showed why he was a second team-all league punter last year, booming a 68-yard punt in the first quarter and two kickoff touchbacks while also converting the lone extra point he attempted

Returning placekicker Jay Tripathi also had a solid night, hitting a 31-yard field goal and an extra point.

Next week Twin Valley travels to take on Selinsgrove while Berks Catholic hosts Executive Education.
