When you’ve got the best back and the best lineman in the league you’re gonna score a lot of points and you’re gonna win a lot of games.

Exeter did both.

With Jayden Zandier carrying the rock and Logan Wegman leading the way with punishing blocks the Eagles matched a program record with 12 wins, set a program record for scoring, and returned to the District 3 Class 5A championship game for the third time in four years.

Tuesday, at the league’s annual awards banquet, Zandier was named Outstanding Back of the Year in Section 2 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League and Wegman was named Outstanding Lineman. Zandier was also named Offensive Back of the Year and Wegman was named Offensive Lineman of the Year.

The seniors were among 10 first-team picks for the Eagles, including senior Carter Redding, at both wide receiver and defensive back; senior Genuine Stutzman at tight end; junior Joel Ummarino at defensive end; junior Aidan Dauble at outside linebacker; and junior Jake Franek at punter. Zandier was selected as a running back and kick returner, Wegman as an offensive tackle and defensive interior lineman.

Conestoga Valley, the Section 2 champ, received nine first-team picks, including Jayden Johnson, who was co-Wide Receiver of the Year along with Redding, and Isaiah Sensenig, the Defensive Back of the Year.

Redding, Wegman and Zandier were among six two-way, first-team picks, along with Gov. Mifflin senior Gavin Kelly, a center and defensive end.

Dauble, Wegman, and Zandier were among six repeat first-team picks, along with Mifflin senior Reese Hohl, a defensive back. Wegman was selected at defensive end as a junior, interior defensive line this season.

Voting was done by the Section 2 head coaches and completed before the District 3 playoffs, when Exeter avenged its only defeat by beating Conestoga Valley 48-14.
