A rival Section 1 coach saw Madyx Gruber play and dubbed the Wilson quarterback a “magician.”

No one disagreed with that assessment.

Watching Gruber play was magical at times as he pulled plays out of his hat and transformed the Bulldogs, leading them to their first Lancaster-Lebanon League title in three years.

He passed for 2,018 yards and 24 touchdowns and ran for 702 yards and nine TDs. Tuesday the senior and first-year starter behind center was named Offensive Back of the Year in Section 1 and shared the section’s Outstanding Back award with Manheim Township running back Declan Clancy.

Gruber was one of seven Wilson picks on the all-section first team, along with junior running back Correll Akings, sophomore tight end Michael Glover, senior guard Derek Reiniger, junior defensive end Rahmel Gaston, and senior outside linebacker Christo Hunsicker.

Gruber was also a first-team pick at defensive back, one of just three two-way picks.

Wilson’s Doug Dahms was named Coach of the Year.

Reading High senior Gabriel Laws was named Linebacker of the Year. He is one of three Red Knights selected for the first team, along with senior offensive tackle Keyshawn Efese and senior defensive back Xavier Beatty.

Manheim Township, runner-up to Wilson in Section 1, had 10 first-team picks, including Clancy, who was named at both running back and linebacker. The Blue Streaks had four major award winners, including Offensive Lineman of the Year Owen Marks, Defensive Back of the Year Donnie Rodriguez and Defensive Lineman of the Year Julian Larue.

Beatty and Clancy were among four repeat first-team selections, along with Cedar Crest defensive tackle Tristan Long and McCaskey Athlete DeAndre Jones.

The team was selected in voting among Section 1 coaches.
