MOUNT JOY — A smile stretched wide across the face of Lancaster Catholic senior Zach Dresch following a season-ending playoff loss late Friday night.

“I played my heart out,” Dresch said. “I had a great season with my friends. I have no regrets. I love it out here.”

Steel-High thumped Lancaster Catholic 36-7 in Friday’s District 3 Class 2A championship game at Donegal High School. But it didn’t keep Dresch and others from seeing the big picture.

“This senior class, their goal was to win a playoff game,” Lancaster Catholic coach Chris Maiorino said. “We hadn’t done that since 2018.”

The Crusaders accomplished that a week earlier by beating Camp Hill in the district semifinals.

“That’s the step we want to take,” Maiorino said. “And they did that. I was proud of them for that.”

The top-seeded Rollers (10-2) were too quick and physical for the second-seeded Crusaders (7-5).

Six ball-carriers split the load in Steel-High’s dizzying hurry-up, run-heavy, motion-heavy, multiple-package offense that totaled 328 rushing yards under the direction of quarterback Yahmir Ceaser (8-for-10, 91 passing yards, 10 carries, 101 rushing yards, two touchdowns).

“I basically saw what was coming the whole time,” Dresch said. “They’re bigger than us. That’s what it came down to. We got scared early on.”

Steel-High won its fifth straight District 3 crown.

“You can see why,” Maiorino said. “Good coaches. Good players. Hats off to them.”
