SOUTH LEBANON — Even Cedar Crest football coach Nick Lambros had trouble smiling after this win.
In a Lancaster-Lebanon Section 1 game marred by more than 20 penalties and eight turnovers, Cedar Crest defeated visiting Reading 42-20 Friday night.
Jackson Custer passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, and Landyn Kline scored two defensive touchdowns as the Falcons (2-1, 4-2) pulled away from the Red Knights (0-3, 1-5) in the fourth quarter.
Cedar Crest won despite committing 12 penalties for 125 yards and turning the ball over three times. Reading was flagged for 11 penalties for 98 yards and committed five turnovers.
Kline cashed in two of those turnovers for touchdowns. He returned an interception 45 yards for a score in the second quarter to help Cedar Crest build a 21-0 halftime lead. Kline also recovered a fumble in the end zone on an errant snap in the final minute.
Custer opened the scoring in the second quarter with a 9-yard run. He threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Zimmerman later in the second quarter and connected with Jack Waranavage for a 34-yard TD strike after Reading had pulled within one score early in the fourth.
Trailing 21-0 at halftime, Reading scored twice in the third quarter to get within 21-14. Gabriel Laws scored on a 3-yard run after a Cedar Crest fumble inside its 10.
The Red Knights scored minutes later on a 56-yard pass from Kayson Fritz to Jared Santos.
Cameron Tirado helped the Falcons slow Reading’s momentum with a 7-yard touchdown run on the second play of the fourth quarter.
Custer ran for 72 yards and a touchdown and threw for a pair of scores for the Falcons.
“Ugly is an understatement,” Lambros said. “That’s one of the worst games I’ve ever coached. We can’t play like that and expect to beat anybody on our schedule.”
