Late kickoff return by Ty Werley seals Hamburg win in Section 5 opener

ANNVILLE — Hamburg quarterback Tyler Shuey made big plays on the ground and in the air that ended up being the difference Friday night in a 27-14 victory win over Annville-Cleona in a Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 5 opener for both teams.
Ty Werley hauled in a 38-yard touchdown pass from Shuey in the third quarter to extend the lead to 20-7.
“It’s easy with (Werley),” Shuey said. “He’s always been a target for me, a big target, and he brings everything down. It’s awesome having him on the field with me.”
Werley returned an onside kick 51 yards for a touchdown with 2:03 remaining to seal the win for the Hawks (3-1).
Annville-Cleona (1-3) running back Jonathon Shay turned in an admirable effort, rushing 15 times for 95 yards and two touchdowns.
His 4-yard run with 2:10 left in the game pulled the Dutchmen within 20-14.
Shuey accounted for three touchdowns, with first-half scoring runs of 8 and 16 yards. He ran for 73 yards and passed for 78.
Hamburg’s big-play ability saved the game as Annville-Cleona outgained the Hawks 282-182 and had 18 first downs — twice as many as the Hawks.
Following an off week after Fairfield forfeited to Hamburg, Shuey said his team worked hard to remain focused.
