Wyomissing joins elite company with 14th victory

Bob Wolfrum

Wyomissing reached rare territory with its 35-14 win over Scranton Prep Saturday in the PIAA Class 3A quarterfinals.

The Spartans became just the seventh Berks team to win 14 games in a season, and the first in seven seasons.

It was the third time in program history Wyomissing has won 14 or more games. It first did it in 2006 when it won the District 3 Class AA championship and beat Montoursville in a PIAA quarterfinal before running into Wilson Area in the semifinals.

In 2012 the Spartans became Berks’ only state football champion and the first Berks team to win 15 and eventually 16 games. They reached 16-0 with a 17-14 win over Aliquippa in the PIAA championship game.

Doug Dahms

Bob Wolfrum has been head coach for each of Wyomissing’s winningest seasons.

Wilson has won 14 games three times: In 1989, when it reached the PIAA Class AAAA championship game, under Gerry Slemmer; in 2008, under Doug Dahms, when it lost a triple-overtime state semifinal to Bethel Park; and in 2014, again under Dahms, when it lost to Pine-Richland in a Class AAAA semifinal.

Berks Catholic is Berks’ only other 14-game winner. The Saints, under Rick Keeley, reached the PIAA Class AA semifinals in 2013, losing to Imhotep Charter.

Three other Berks teams have won 13 times in a season: Wilson, in 2012; Wyomissing, in 2014; and Berks Catholic in 2017.

Prior to the start of the District 3 playoffs in 1982 several teams recorded perfect seasons. Also, in the early years of the PIAA Tournament, not all district champs advanced. Wyomissing won district championships in 1990, 1991 and 1993 and did not qualify for the state tournament, which used a region-based power-rating formula. Central Catholic’s 1983 season ended with its District 3 championship. The PIAA playoffs did not start until 1988.

Only three teams finished 11-0: Holy Name in 1975 and Wilson in 1978 and 1981.

Four teams finished 10-0: Wilson, in 1967 and 1969; Muhlenberg, in 1972; and Conrad Weiser in 1981.

Four teams finished 9-0: Reading High, in 1913; Exeter, in 1967 and 1970; and Conrad Weiser, in 1973.
