Exeter’s Eric Nangle is Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week

Eric Nangle says he doesn’t get caught up in stats and the associated accolades that come with them. Nimble as he is, the Exeter tailback would have trouble avoiding the huge numbers he put up in a record-setting performance Friday in a 42-35 win over Cedar Cliff.

He rushed for a program-record 332 yards and scored six touchdowns, snagging Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week honors.

His six TDs are a program record as are his 1,539 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns this season.

“Eric’s effort Friday night was like nothing I’ve ever seen,” said Exeter coach Matt Bauer. “It was truly exceptional and a testament to how relentlessly hard he plays on every single play.”

Nangle scored on an 83-yard screen pass and on runs of 46, 4, 5, 59 and 9 yards.

“Eric is something special,” said Eagles center Kyle Helm. “He’s up there with the top backs in the state. He comes in day in and day out and works hard. He balls out.”

That performance came on the heels of a then career-high 230 yards against Manheim Central in the semifinals. Over three playoff games Nangle has rushed for 692 yards and scored 10 TDs. That’s a good season for most.

The win puts the Eagles in the District 3 Class 5A championship opposite Gov. Mifflin.

“It was just a huge game,” Nangle said of beating Cedar Cliff. “It was big for the whole team. It was big for the school. First time we’ve ever won three games in the playoffs. That’s what really feels good. That feels amazing.”

Nangle is a two-time all-league pick but until his recent playoff performances hasn’t got much notice.

“I try not to worry about all that,” said the senior. “My teammates know what I can do. They believe in me. They trust me to go out there every night and give it my best. That’s all that matters to me.”

In the past week Nangle has received offers to play at Alvernia University and Misericordia University.

“Friday night hopefully showed a lot of college coaches just how special this young man is,” said Bauer. “It would be a tragedy in my opinion if Eric wasn’t able to continue his career at the next level. Whoever recruits him will not be disappointed!”

Nangle becomes the fifth Exeter player to receive MikeDragoSports.com Player of the Week honors. Sam Orzolek was selected as Defensive Player of the Week and Lucas Palange and Kyle Lash were selected Lineman of the Week. (Palange was selected twice.)
