Five Fast Football Facts for Week 13

On the 40th anniversary of the District 3 football playoffs, some facts about the history of the tournament:

Wilson has qualified for the tournament 29 times, tied for second-most with Cumberland Valley. Manheim Central holds the record with 33 appearances. The Bulldogs’ first appearance came in 1984, in the tournament’s third year. Their first win didn’t come until 1989, after four straight opening-round losses.

Holy Name’s only district championship came in its final season, in 2010, against Millersburg. The Blue Jays had reached the title game six times previously but were turned back every time, including by Wyomissing in 1990 and 1991.

Jason Cape of Wilson and Brandon Fox of Muhlenberg share the District 3 Tournament record for longest punt return for a TD, at 93 yards. Cape’s came in a 2020 Class AAAA championship game vs. Central Dauphin; Fox’s came in a 2005 quarterfinal vs. York Suburban.

Muhlenberg’s Brett Fox has the record for receiving yards in a District 3 Tournament game, with 258 vs. Hempfield in a 2008 opener. Conrad Weiser’s Danny Sanchez is next with 254, in 2008 vs. West York.

Manheim Central has made the most championship game appearances, with 24. The Barons are followed by Cumberland Valley (21), Wyomissing (17), Bishop McDevitt (17), Camp Hill (15) and Delone Catholic (15). The Spartans have reached the title game six times in the last seven years.
