Gov. Mifflin’s Nick Singleton — who else? — is Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week

Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week

Nick Singleton

A record-tying seven touchdowns in a game?
That’s par for the course when you’re talking about Nick Singleton, says his coach.

“That’s what I expect out of him,” Gov. Mifflin coach Jeff Lang said after Singleton became the first Berks player in 65 years, and just the second ever in the District 3 Tournament, to reach the end zone seven times in a 63-35 win over Warwick. “That’s an expectation I have out of him.”

Singleton ran for a career-high 330 yards in the Class 5A quarterfinal, more than enough to earn Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Singleton scored on runs of 13, 56, 26, 2, 18, 60 and 65 yards. And he did it on just 15 carries.

“That’s a college kid playing on a high school field,” Warwick coach Bob Locker told lancasteronline.com after the game.

The highlight of highlights came in the final seconds of the first half, when Singleton scored his sixth TD on a 60-yard run to make it 49-14.

“I was about to take a knee, but you never take a knee with him in the backfield,” Lang said. “That’s happened before, and you think you are done with five or six seconds left and you pitch it to him and see what happens.”

Singleton became just the third Berks player to score seven touchdowns and first since Dan Capozello of West Reading, in 1954. The first was John P. Charlton of Reading High, in 1912.

He is just the second player in the 40-year history of the tournament to score seven TDs; the first was LeSean “Shady” McCoy of Bishop McDevitt, who did it in 2004 vs. Carlisle. McCoy went on to play 12 seasons in the NFL.

Singleton also broke the program record for rushing yards and matched the Berks record for touchdowns in a season. His 1,832 rushing yards broke the record of 1,789, set by Issac Ruoss in 2017. His 39 TDs tied the Berks single-season record, set by Jason Reinhart of Muhlenberg in 1998.

He has 6,099 career yards and 111 touchdowns, each a Berks record by a mile.

Singleton earns Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week honors for the fifth time this season; Mifflin has played just nine games.
