Hamburg’s Mitchell Watt: Body Zone Physical Therapy Defensive Player of the Week

Body Zone Physical Therapy Defensive Player of the Week

When Hamburg football coach Jeff Chillot says that Mitchell Watt can play any position on the field, he means it literally. The 6-foot, 195-pound senior is listed on the Hawks’ roster at four different spots; Friday night he added a fifth.

Watt was moved from defensive end to tackle and came up with five sacks as the Hawks defeated Bermudian Springs 31-27 in a District 3 Class 3A quarterfinal on Hawk Hill.

Watt had 10 tackles overall, including three others for loss; he also recovered a fumble. That was more than enough to earn Body Zone Physical Therapy Defensive Player of the Week honors.

“Mitchell is a true team player,” Chillot said. “He will play anywhere and do anything we ask. He plays multiple positions on offense — tight end, fullback, quarterback — and on defense — linebacker, end and tackle. He also long snaps and short snaps.”

Watt played defensive tackle for the first time Friday as the Hawks earned the first district playoff win in program history. He led a defensive attack that recorded 11 sacks and allowed just 227 total yards.

“He was quick off the ball and relentless all night,” Chillot said.

The Hawks have enjoyed a breakout season. Their No. 3 seed is their highest ever in the district playoffs. They’ll play in the semifinals Friday for the first time. Their seven wins are their most in 14 seasons.

“Mitchell’s a great leader, both by example and vocally,” Chillot said. “He does all the right things on and off the field. He is one of our captains. We wouldn’t have had the success we’ve had this season without Mitchell. He has been a true pleasure to coach.”

This is Watt’s first selection as Defensive Player of the Week. He is just the second Hamburg player selected for a MikeDragoSports.com weekly award this season. Diohnny Ruiz was selected as Offensive Player of the Week following a Week 6 win over Kutztown.
